I have no doubt that this has been done to death many times now. Just how many of you have gone onto the ‘find an editors page’ and looked around for an editor that you believe you could work with to help you along with a story your writing. Even gone on to write to them to ask for there help and received nothing in return, I'm up to my fourth now and decided to give up and go it alone. I'm sure there must be a way of deleting editors off of the page if they choose not to do it anymore.

Yes I no it's all voluntary and we should all be grateful they help people like me in the first place, seems a shame that manners count for nothing as well. I mean if they can’t be bothered to do it anymore and they still get people like me asking them, either they tell me they no longer edit or they take there names off of the page, it’s not rocket science.

Ok rant over with, I shall go back into the shadows, hide and get on with life again now.

:rose:

What I do now is have friends read and proof my stuff. I had the same sort of difficulties with volunteer editors when I started.

I know it's voluntary but it is damned frustrating.

I have grave doubts if there's a mechanism to delete them (the Vol. Ed. listings, I mean). I went through the same ordeal.

What you need, in contrast with what the site suggests, is to visit the Editor's forum, and place a thread there. The same thing works here, actually, though maybe not quite as well. You can find someone in either forum who might take you on.

I've done it dozens of times, for instance, but I've never become one of the site's Volunteer Editors. Many people here actually do editing in real life! There's a tremendous amount of talented help available.

Not every potential editor is a good match for you, though.

Some people just want a proofreader, and extra set of fresh eyes to police errors.

Some really want a collaborator, and not every potential editor is up for that.

Some need a lot of help, and feel cheated if they only receive a proofread job with a few general comments.

Plus there are often issues about content (some won't touch Incest or Rape stories, others won't tackle straight stories or homosexual ones) or file format, or sheer length of the story to be edited.

If you persist-- 'way, 'way beyond a mere four members of the list-- you will receive answers, but many of them will fall outside the parameters of what you need, for the reasons I just listed, or for more subtle ones.

When you cry, in a thread, here or in the Editor's forum, I need an editor, consequently, it will save time if you specify how long the story is, what kind of editing help you'd like, and what sort of story you have, just to start with.

Good fortune.

Best advice^

To the OP:

Someone has told me that the volunteer editor's page is horrendously out of date since they're busy with other things. Supposedly, it takes months to get approved as a volunteer editor. That should explain most of the problems.

I feel a little catty :cattail:, so I must question why you haven't even bothered to look in the Editor's Forum XD

Sorry.... that is all I have time for today.....:D

Actually, I feel your pain.... and as I am living proof of, self-editing is a bitch... (and this is before you marry one).

Follow the good advice above. The more information you post about your story, the better. You may pique someone's interest.

Good luck! Oh and Welcome to AH.... Where lurkers are always welcome....

The flip-side of EDITORS ARE ASSHOLES is: writers are shitwits who abuse the assistance they get.

In fairness, though, I deal with copy editors who destroy my work with assinine 'corrections.'

I recently wrote an essay about local government's draconian response to smokers; the county commission wants to penalize the 'nicotine fiends' for the statistical costs they add to the health insurance premiums the government pays.

So my essay took a sardonic tone, questioning why it is the county commission wants to punish 'nicotine fiends' (the term the county used) but not the 'cripples, crazees, alkies, druggies, and fatties' on the county payroll?

The copy editor left 'nicotine fiend' alone, but changed the rest to" physically challenged, emotionally distressed, substance disabled, and obese." The change ruined the mocking tone of the work.

JBJ, I think the changes made it funnier. Makes it sound like you're patronizing them for the most part.

Probably the result of some draconian anti-poo flinging policy.... go figure!

I am sure our new author found your post useful, however.

Probably not. The odds are against him having much gray matter.

I would have left everything but "crazees." It should really be "crazies." :D

As for editors, there are good ones - check the editor's forum, that's your best bet. When I did Survivor two years ago, I put out a call for an editor who would be willing to work with me all year. I also did a little "test" with each, since I got quite a few responses, and picked the one I "clicked" with best. She was an amazing editor, and I really appreciated her help. I also learned a lot. And in the end, she was inspired to start writing herself, which she hadn't before. So it can be a good relationship to develop, all the way around.

SELENA

I know. CRAZEES is my ideosyncratic/cartoon spelling. Most Crazies arent really crazy, theyre functionally anxious or depressed.

CERISENOIRE

Maybe. My essay had its intended effect of backing down the pols with reagrds to smokers.

I dont smoke, but I'm weary of pols chastising smokers because they can get away with it.

Markelly, I noticed you do not have the PM function working. That might be part of your problem. Many of us use that as our primary means of communicating here, rather than email.

A welcome  for the little newbie from the good little witch.

So would it really be such an effort to go straight to the list of currently active editors that snoopercharmbrights maintains for the specific purpose of overcoming the very problems you're compalining about?

complaining...

I didn't know about snoop's list. I can't think why someone new to the site would. You are snide, Carver, and you don't even link to it.

Snide, absolutely. Too absent -minded to create a link, no. I'm simply assuming that anyone who won't take time to click a mouse more than once probably isn't worth an editor's time.

Great attitude. But it's a seller's market, so you can certainly entertain yourself with it.

I didn't know about it, either.

A new person would have trouble finding it hidden among the Sticky threads, I imagine.
And people don't go to the Editor's Forum when they want an editor. New writers generally don't visit the forums at all.

Another thing - in the Writer's Resources, the volunteer editor program is listed as the way to find an editor, with no mention of an Editor's Forum. This is a big site and not everyone will go and see different options (that we know about as forum regulars) when one of them is advertised in the resources.

I know I started there first.
