Ebook / Electronic Publishing - A variation of the AH Anthology Idea

Before I start rambling, I have permission from Imp and Earl to start this thread, as I am largely following on their coattails :D

I want to try ebook publishing and wonder if anyone else is interested. I am researching the logistics, as they seem to come in 2 formats, adobe or Microsoft. The end product could be sold starting out with perhaps net auctions such as ebay, and maybe a simple [but professional ;)] website [I have the script for purchasing things off the web somewhere].

The difference from the AH Anthology (that is someone else’s idea, and I fully respect that, so I won‘t be going there) is that I want to aim for a particular target audience. Eg BDSM - but dealing with different aspects, such as group, anal, gay etc but still with BDSM at its core. Maybe different ebooks for:

Eg. Horror - demons, ghosts, vampires
Eg fetishes [perhaps low key ones to get wider appeal]
Eg. Mystery - private eye theme etc
eg Sci-fi / Fantasy - new worlds etc
eg. Romance/reluctance - maybe a captive or historical theme or both.

These are only opening suggestions, so you tell me:
1. What sort of collection of stories you think people might be interested in reading
2. Story/ies you would like to submit, and what categorisation it might fall under.

If authors are interested, the story will have to fit with the whole feel of the book, so not everything put forward can be included [including my own!]. It would help if you could provide a link and also a mini description of your story. The story doesn’t have to be posted on Lit.

Without a doubt I would be informing Literotica [and even beg their guidance/assistance and see if they can help in getting us on amazon etc]

Anyone want to help or contribute? Obviously there is a need for people for the following areas to start with:
1. Proofreading / editing skills
2. Marketing / research
3. design & cover art
4. website building / technology savvy.
5. Story contributions

I would prefer for revenue [if any :D] to be divided up percentage wise among the contributors [this would include those working behind the scenes in proof reading etc] in a way that is agreed upon beforehand, and everyone can decide individually which cause [including themselves :D] they want to donate to.

I welcome your input. The above is only a tender of some ideas, and I invite others to join in this collaboration. Let me know what you think!

Cheers, WT

Off topic but...

Check out the 2005 Writers Market

It's sort of like Consumer Reports for writers. Terrific resource.

Think like a business and this is very easy to do. You don't even have to buy the software to convert into e-books cause their are companies that will do this for you. How does it work?

1. You are acting as the publisher.
2. You define the book, title, size, etc.
3. Use a simple contract with folks who submit work (your authors) that tells them how and when they'll get paid, what percentage, etc.
4. Open a PayPal account so you can get paid.
5. Once you are ready to publish - final is in a word processing document, you have a cover, etc. - then to go lulu.com or another similar site.

For this example, I'll use lulu.com

www.lulu.com even has a tour that you can take to see how its done.

Options:
A. Sell as e-book only - no cost to you, only royalties
B. Sell as e-book and print (POD) - your cost is only proof copies
C. Add ISBN number for distribution through Amazon/Barnes&Noble, etc ($149 fee) - plus a proof copy or two

lulu.com has a place for you to set up your website.
lulu.com handles all the money transactions from your paying customers
lulu.com pays you the royalties from the sales.

* As the lead editor/publisher/author you set up an account and receive the royalties.
* You pay your writers.
* At the end of the year - you issue 1099's.

If this still sounds like fun - go for it!

If you want to be really official - use a fictious business name, get a business license and become a publisher. Open a bank account only for this use and assign your PayPal account to it. It's just that easy. No kidding.
Think of the tax write offs!

Remember, to make money you have to treat it as a business.

WT - there is no magic to this. Plenty of authors will want to join you. It just takes time, effort and lots of elbow grease.

To your success,

Ruby

Ruby, I like how you think!

Don't suppose you want to be business director????

I'm still checking out Digital Rights Management and how it works, but an ISBN seems a must.

Cheers :rose:

WT,

You've got what it takes.

* Ruby smiles at the compliment and sends you a PM *

As DRM and ISBNs are a must, so also are contracts and other
items.

You can make your own contract. Cut and paste from what others before you have done by downloading contracts from e-book publishers.

To your success,

Ruby

For BDSM, and I stress that, my ebook publisher would like to see what's on offer, and would make a sound commercial deal (which would not involve you paying anything). Royalties are paid monthly or every $200 whichever is the slower.

You send your *finished* text and they do the rest. He has a POD off-shoot for some of his publications, again done properly.

Hey Snooper, sounds good. If only there were others interested! :D

Wishful

Reading this with a great deal of interest. It is not top of my priorities just now but will move up the scale over the next twelve months. However, I will try 'traditional' publishing first before considering a 'do-it-myself' approach. On that front I'm making progress, and hope to be able to share news over the next three months. Big meet in June that is scaring the pants off me ;)

Oh god, this is getting scary. Do I? Can I? Am I good enough?

Shit, what are you doing to me!!!!!

So far, I only managed to get one story in print, without getting paid. LOL

And I do have a story no publisher will ever touch with a pole.
Believe me, I tried. :D
Apart from the question whether the writing is good enough, I mean.
Could make for a wicked religious niche with The Novice.

Title - Sticks and Stones, all seven chapters as 1 novel.
Description - How a priest gets involved with a herbal healer and accuses her of being a witch. In the end he pays with his life.
Categorie - Reluctance

Another one could be for the corner of Adventure in SciFi.
Uncovering a spy, part 1
Probing a spy, part 2
Snaring a spy, part 3
They would have to be made into one story. Would probably need some heavy editing as well, since those three were my first stories ever.
Description - Amazon warrior gets captured by soldiers, in more than one sense.
Category - Romance

:D

Go for it and goodluck! :rose:

From PMs, some possible themes seem to be shaping up:

- fantasy/sci-fi & slave [x2]
- historical romance & slave [x3]

Anyone else got some possibilities along these or other lines?

Cheers,
