I had been searching eBay for Marcel Duchamp, because he has a link to my local area.

I have bought a couple of books about him and his work, but then I saw a original drawing by Duchamp offered.

I bought it.

Then I saw that the same seller had some Picasso drawings. I bought them too.

All three are original works. Whether they are by Duchamp and Picasso? That would cost me a lot of money to find out. So far, including postage from Italy I have spent $100 US. I think I own an original Duchamp and two original Picassos. Whether I do, or not, I think the enjoyment I'm getting out of them is well worth $100.

The original Cy Twombly is in the post. :)

Wow, that Duchamp is particularly charming - whether or not it's an original.

I like the Picassos too (a quick interpretation of that Rorschach ink blot by any psychiatrist should reveal a good profile match ;) )

The Cy Twombly has arrived. :)

So far I have spent $103.90 US and more than half of that is postage and packing costs.

That is mad.

I have four original art works by significant modern artists for less than the price of a single limited edition print.

You're on a roll!

That is fun. I don't really care for Twombly, myself, but having a Picasso and/or a Duchamp would be coolio.

Next attempts are Jean Cocteau, Matisse and L S Lowry. :D

The third Picasso has just been posted from Italy.

My local Artists' Co-operative is/are jealous. They have photocopies of my purchases so far in their kitchen. The general reaction is WTF? followed by 'I want!".

Third Picasso:

My Duchamp appears to be a study for the cartoon shown on this site:

It seems appropriate for Literotica. It is a companion for bachelors - 'she kisses, she undresses herself'.

She is a 1910 version of a blow-up sex doll.

Lost out on the Lowry, but now have a Picasso painting on the way.

The Picasso is unlikely to be genuine. The original is too well known.

What about the Cocteau?

I like the Twombly.

Gosh, I am totally jealous too! LOL.

I won the Cocteau. Only a little while more for the Matisse.

Edited: Won the Matisse too. Now I must stop buying. I'm going away for a weekend conference in a few minutes.

You mean we have to wait till next week to see the Cocteau? I really want to see the Cocteau.

The Cocteau and the Matisse have arrived.

The Picasso painting is almost certainly a copy.

Another Jean Cocteau

This was listed as a Merman. I don't think so!

I took the Picasso Girl and a Dove to the Artists Cooperative today.

They agreed with me. It isn't genuine. It is on modern Plywood and probably painted with Acrylic paint. :D

But the drawings? Some could be genuine; some might not be; some might be good fakes.

It doesn't matter. I like them and I think I have some genuine ones for stupid prices.

Two Lowry drawings are in the post. He is one of the most forged 20th Century Artists so I'm not expecting more than "in the style of" Lowry.

Art is an expression and if it makes you happy it doesn't matter who created it!|
I like the mer-man/woman interesting double tail each half with a caudal fin.

BB

ps the Picasso ram/ox is divine! Love the colours

Lowry

The two Lowrys arrived this morning. The first one is about A4 size. The other is shown almost full size.

Are they ripping off their kindergarten drawing books and selling each piece separately? Poor kids!

^_^

Do I assume you don't appreciate/like L S Lowry? A similar Lowry from the same seller made £77 today. If there had been verifiable provenance each would be worth about $3,000.

I have just bought another Jean Cocteau drawing for £6.58 including postage.

Three more Cy Twombly, a Paul Seurat, another Jean Cocteau and a Paul Klee are on the way.

Today I won auctions for:

Another Picasso;
A Fernand Leger;
A Marc Chagall; and
A Keith Haring.

I lost out on a Cocteau, a Picasso, and another Keith Haring - because I wasn't prepared to pay high for art without any provenance. I don't mind paying low and each of my purchases so far have been less than the cost of reproduced commercial prints.

I now have a 20th Century Art collection for a total cost less than the price of a cheap laptop.

So far I have been bidding on 'original' art by artists I know, and works that I like. The Cy Twombly was an experiment. Although I had heard of Cy Twombly, I hadn't really appreciated his work. But I liked the one I won.

I might like a Salvador Dali, but I find some of his work depressing or very difficult to understand. I would only bid on works that I could relate to.

Any suggestions for artists I should look for to add to my growing collection?

What 20th Century art would you want to own? By what artists? Why?

The larger question for me is why are these works put on eBay at such low prices? I accept that most or many of my purchases might be copies or fakes, but they are NOT mechanical or digital reproductions. Someone has used pencil, pen, paint and artistic skill to produce what I have bought. But at the prices I have paid it seems not worth the effort involved.

I will enjoy them even while I have doubts about their authenticity.

Hard to suggest for someone else, but I can tell you who I'd like pieces by;

(some are barely 20t century :) )
Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Arthur Rackham, N.C. Wyath, Maxfield Parrish, Frank Frazetta, Brom, Frank Cho, Adam Hughes......

Figurative artists and many are considered "illustrators". or comic book artists:eek::eek:

I know. It is difficult to suggest for others. The local artists' cooperative is divided over my Cy Twombly and the L S Lowrys. Some love them. Some can't see the point of them. They are unanimous in liking Picasso, Matisse and Jean Cocteau.

Schiele? I'm not sure I appreciate his work.

Bouguereau? Too pretty pretty for me. Maxfield Parrish? Not for me. Frank Fazetta? Brom? Frank Cho? Adam Hughes? Again, no. I'm not really into fantasy art. But I can see the attraction of all of them to you from your work. They are good artists. I wouldn't turn them down if they appeared on eBay, but I wouldn't bid high.

I had to look some of them up on WiKi. There was a Klimt for sale on eBay but it didn't look right for Klimt, and worse, I didn't like it.

I have some First Edition books illustrated by Rackham, N C Wyeth, Gustave Doré and E H Shepherd. I have just bought a book of Matisse's erotic drawings.

If I could find original Pre-Raphaelites? I can dream.
