Earthquake!

Working in that direction. Felt another aftershock here a half hour ago. But they are getting weaker.

Now to worry about the track of Hurricane Irene.

Only an East-coaster would bother put down her teacup to squawk of a mere 5.9 earthquake felt at a distance.

That's pretty much what I said when I read about it. 5.9 on the Richter Scale. Around here, we wouldn't even call that an earthquake. If we bothered to mention it at all, it would be called "a little tremor" or something dismissive like that.

Uniqueness breeds interest.

Commonness breeds apathy.

On more than one occasion there's been a 6.0+ quake while I was having sex. Opportunist that I am, I always ask afterwards, "Did the Earth move for you too?"

The last time I offered that line my wife looked to dick, flaccid by then, and replied, "It was okay, but I'm still waiting for the Big One."

And no, neither of us deemed it necessary to stop in the middle.

Yes, but we don't get earthquakes much, of any magnitude, so it's a notable thing out here. Please don't be so dismissive. The geology is also different, and has different effects.

I do hope the Cathedral and Washington Monument get fixed up. The Cathedral is just an amazing place. A little out of the way, but well worth the visit.

Yes, TxRad explained that on this thread--and folks from the Geological Survey have explained it on TV. Posters just aren't reading in or are suffering from "you think you hurt? Well let me tell you about me" issues.

My BIL works for a Japanese based company. His boss's reaction was "A 5.8? And that makes national news? Here, we just think it's the kids getting out of bed!"

Again, read what TxRad posted--and what the Geological Survey has been saying about the differences in the earth's plate and earthquake effect. It's all relative. Besides the fact that Japan has these on alternate Tuesdays and the East Coast hasn't had one this size since 1897--and has the construction history to go with that.

If Irene hits D.C. directly, we might be less a few monuments after the earthquake got to them first.

Anyone else feel the earthquake ten minutes ago (1:55 Eastern Time)? 5.8, with the epicenter between Charlottesville and Richmond, VA. The news is saying it was felt from Washington, D.C., down to North Carolina. It certainly was felt here in Charlottesville. Lasted for a good thirty seconds.

I've been through worse in Japan and Thailand, but this one was a surprise.

We did not feel it in Texas. :p

I have felt one tho, back in about '95. We were visiting the dh's parents in west Texas. They lived in a rickety old house, and the whole structure just kind of waved. We all looked at each other like WTF??? We then went outside, where we saw the neighbors, who were also WTFing. We had to explain to my father-in-law why we were so excited. My FIL, who has Parkinson's, just chuckled and said, "It's just another day to me."

Earthquakes is good humpin' weather, I tells ya. Rayleigh wave motion is da bomb!

“Yes, there is a direct connection between earthquakes and homosexuality. There was in Haiti and it is here, in New York, in Washington, D.C., where they passed homosexual legislation ordinances, in New York City and state, where they opened, especially on Sunday early, where they passed the homosexual marriage law.”

Oh no, if homosexuals cause earthquakes, California is Doomed, Doomed I say!
