 Just had an Earthquake. A looooong rolling one. Yikes!

3.1 Epicenter Lennox, CA.

It wasn't terrible but man, did that thing go on and on. It just would not stop shaking.

Hope everyone is okay!

That's what you get for living on a planetoid instead of a planet like the rest of us. :catroar:

The astronomy people have seen fit to call Pluto a "dwarf planet." I feel that the term is demeaning ansd condescending. I prefer the term, "petite planet."

Pluto loses status as a planet

Pluto was discovered in 1930 by US astronomer Clyde Tombaugh

Astronomers have voted to strip Pluto of its status as a planet.
About 2,500 scientists meeting in Prague have adopted historic new guidelines that see the small, distant world demoted to a secondary category.

The researchers said Pluto failed to dominate its orbit around the Sun in the same way as the other planets.

The International Astronomical Union's (IAU) decision means textbooks will now have to describe a Solar System with just eight major planetary bodies.

Pluto, which was discovered in 1930 by the American Clyde Tombaugh, will be referred to as a "dwarf planet".

I refuse to acknowledge the demotion of my planet. One day, astronomers will restore it to planethood and apologize for their gross error in judgement. :cattail:

And yes, everything okay. It lasted forever, but it was mild. Nothing tipped over or broke.

Now was this a naturaly occuring quake or did you cause it:devil:.

Preen. Thank you. So few understand how insensitive and inaccurate the new title is.

I can neither affirm or deny any causal connection between my nocturnal, almost-bedtime activities and the earthquake. I will only repeat, it was a looooong earthquake ;)

Well, the news is saying that it was actually 4.7. Not sure which is right. Website or news....

So it was a long slow, slow, vibration...mmmm?

;)

Checking back to report a Richter 5 earthquake at 8:39 p.m. PDT. Really noisy, set the terrorier completely off. A few things tumbled off shelves but no damage to speak at the borderlands. The epicenter seems to be around the area called 'Lennox'. Okay, here.

Information from the National Geological Survey website augmented by what happened in the den.

For those who wonder where Lennox is, think just south of LAX. No one is reporting any damage or injuries at last count.

It was about 0.001 by the time it reached me, here in the San Gabriel foothills. About as strong as a cat scratching itself nearby-- for an awful long time...

That's funny. Here on the OC borderlands it was like a freight train running through the front yard for about a half minute.

Gonna call my kids and see if anything was left to feel there... magnitude is sometimes less important in that way than if it is a roller or a jerker...

"rollers" seem to be felt further away in my very non-scientific opinion...

Edited to add: I am officially blaming Amicus. Having a thread up titled "Goodbye...California" is just asking for a quake... *big silly grin*

Since Clyde Tombaugh lived down the street from my folks and I saw him a couple of times a week for most of my life, I take the demotion personally. He was a fellow Prof at NMSU with my Dad.
I also heard his story of the discovery several times and got to look through his homemade telescope in his back yard. :D
