The news says Seatle had a 6.4 earthquake today. no reports of injuries so far.

To those who live in the Evergreen state, let us know you're OK. I certainly hope you and your loved ones are.

I just turned on the news & saw the earthquake. I also hope that everyone up in the Seattle area is okay. It looks like a lot of damage, but they haven't reported about injuries.I have headline news on, hoping they will show something soon.

That is so sad

Its just as bad as trying to give warnings out for tornado's ..There are no warning for eathquakes...I think people need aleast some kind of warning especcially the older genreation...

THE WIFE

NO Todd we are moving to Vacouver Wash.

:p

*bratcat*

Seems fine. A little shaken up, but fine. She lives in one of the Vancouvers, I think. Anyway, she talked like she did.

Seattle is still a beautiful city. One of my good friends is moving up there in a few months, I just talked to her & she said earthquakes or not, she is moving. Crazy weather & stuff is everywhere, I am terrified of hurricanes, but wasn't scared during the tornado here last year.

Well, it will be riots and earthquakes with pretty scenery, Siren. Kind of a trade-off. ;)

Siren Sweetie, beware

This is not a Doomsday post, so all of you who misunderstand the conceptual need for warnings, please be kind in your responses!

Sweetie, I am not saying this is true for a fact, but I studied Geology for awhile, and most of the entire area of, Washinton, Oregon, and Wyoming esp., is a geologic hotspot, often considerd to be more potentially and detrimentally dangerous than the LA to SF region of Cali. It is due to the fact that the region sits directly over several giant batholiths (underground pools of magma).

I am not trying to freak anyone out, or stimulate an arugement, as I have disclaimed myself if I am misconveying the truth (just like a good girl should), it's just that due to the fact that the threat is all in speculation, Geologists won't touch the matter. But from what I know, the calculations, based on historical frequency and terrestrial factors, among other things, are not in favor of stability, and that in all actuality a major eruption of one of the surrounding volcanos (Mt. Hood, Shasta, Ranier(sp?)etc.) could be of a magnitude far greater than that of Mt. Saint Helen.

On my many trips to that surrounding area, I have always felt somewhat uneasy, even before I had learned what I know. This would be something I would look in to very deeply before moving to that region. Just a word of warning.

You can get most if not all of the info you need at http://www.USGS.gov Good luck

P.S. this and other earthquakes may be an indication of an upcoming and larger eruption or earthquake

Lived in the Seattle area for years. Now live on the Long Beach Peninsula in SW Wastington about 20 miles from Oregon. So it shook a little, so what. Was a farm equipment in Kansas for several years, now that's scarey. Don't mind a little shaking, but to go to work in Kansas and ride a tornado to Texas or Oklahoma. no thanks. I stay here

Spokane...

I live in spokane (unfortunately) and we felt a little bit of a jolt this morning. I am from Texas and I would rather deal with tornadoes any day!! I hate this place and G.R if it fell into the ocean or sunk intothe big pools of magma you were talking about, then YIPPEE!!!! (as long as I'm not herelol) I think this state has a lot to offer.. more over near the Seattle area. All that seems to be here is a lot, and I mean a lot of pedaphiles and a bunch of espresso stands... I don't mean to rant...but I really hate it here.. I want to go back to Texas in the worst way, hopefully we will be soon.. Oregon is beautiful and California has a lot of great shopping and stuff to do. This place is just BLAH!! but all this is just my honest opinion..............

Hey GR... you are right about that whole area being unstable. I think there are what two major crustal plates that come together in the that area along with several minor plates... I got to live in the area where the center of the earthquake was... it looked like from the map I saw it was really close to Ft Lewis and I do belive the Dancin Vixen is in that area.. has anyone heard from her? Well, I guess it doesnt matter where you live, mother nature is going to try and find something to make living there more interesting... I mean we have the tornadoes and yes some extremely minor earthquakes down in my area.. the earthquakes dont get above a 5 or so.. or at least that what the USGS site said. And if you live up north you get to deal with the snow, the beach has hurricanes and tsunamies. So what the hell, just like the area were you live and deal with that goes on there... :D

Live and work in Tacoma and we got quite the shake in our building but no major damage. Seattle's Pioneer Square was hit pretty hard though. I'm sure the local news will have full coverage for the next week...thank god for the computer!!

MattD, good point. There is no where to run, no where to hide, cept some places are just a bit safer, and some natural disasters are less life threatening than others. I have been in the heart of two very major hurricanes in New England and am no worse for it.

Rasputin Hey glad to see you are okay...

Rasputin made a point that is one thing that kinda really pisses me off about TV news in general. Why in the hell do they seem to beat disasters like earthquakes, floods, and other stuff into the ground. I mean there is only so much reporting you can do about the whole thing before all of the people in the area starting saying enough please.
One other thing that has always amazed me about TV reporting is how that the reporters seem to be able to find the dumbest damn person in the whole crowd to talk to. I see it alot on the reporting we get after tornadoes, it seems to make the whole area look like that most of the people just fell off a turip truck or worse. Okay sorry off on a rant... and it is early in the morning... this is going to be a interesting day I can already tell :D

i live in BC...the quake had an epicentre in olympia washington i think, nothing happened in vancouver bc, nothing got broken but apparently seattle had a lot of damage...one person died of a heart attack but havent heard of any quake related deaths yet...talk about "rocking your world" but i didn't get anything out of it! damn...missed out again!

Glad to hear that it wasn't bad in BC and Spokane.

According to my brother it rated only a 4.2 in the other Vancouver -- "interesting" but not terribly "exciting" was the way my sister-in-law put it.

I still haven't heard from my brother in Sand Point, ID (near Spokane) but if it was no big thing in Spokane, it probably wasn't really noticable in Sand Point.

It seems circumstance and good building codes combined to make this nothing more than a "big news day" and a reminder that there is a reason for those building codes.

(Ambro, It's nice you can crush beer cans, but you really should be more concerned about the long term damage from using your head to do it. :p )

From Los Angeles: So Seattle gets our earthquakes and we get their rain. What should we trade next? How about "Countries we almost border?" I'll take Vancouver over Tijuana any day.

I was thinking about this the other day...Between earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, 100 year floods and Illinois Nazis there is no safe place to live in the United States. You've got alligators swimming up canals and eating dogs and people in the southeast. You've got the hottest place in the whole freakin' world in the southwest. You've got near-arctic conditions around the Great Lakes. And then there's the real great danger of being bored to death in Oklahoma.

So, where is it? Where is the safest place in the United States?

Ah geeze youse guys are scarwin me....

:p

GIVE ME BACK MY DAMNED RAIN!
The snow pack here is only 40% of normal and we will be in a big hurt come summer if we don't get more rain. So can you please head those clouds this way?
No trade on the "Countries we almost border". It's just the way I like it. We got the bratcat just the other side of the border!

I'm out here on the Olympic Peninsula and there wasn't much more then some shaking going on. The quake was centered very close to McNiel Island, just north of Olympia, and about 30 miles deep. There was a previous quake of 7.1 in that exact location back in 1949 I believe. This one was 6.8.
Seattle had some damage. my brother works for Boeing at the Renton plant and they had to close the building he works in until an inspection can be done.
Olympia got hit pretty hard, but all in all it wasn't bad. One person died of a heart attack and 128 were injured.
Everyone up here knows we are sitting on a subduction zone, but it doesn't bother us much. I'd rather put up with a little shake once in a while, and a volcano or two, instead of tornado's. My family is from Oklahoma and I've seen the destruction the twisters can do.
Actually the most damage was done by the rioters in Pioneer Square for Mardi Gras. First WTO now Mardi Gras, what is the attraction of riots?

Sorry Siren, OOOPS I just thought you should know. I wouldn't let it get to you. I think it is so beautiful up there, it makes any threat worth overlooking. Your gonna love it there and be just fine.

Dcl, That would be the Green Mountians of Vermont.

I don't know about that. We have high school kids murdering college professors, and we sit on one end of the fault line that caused the huge Missouri earthquake of 1814.

Ok, the earthquake was originally measured at 7.0 but downgraded to 6.8. We all got lucky, it could definitely have been worse. The quake itself started about 30 miles underground, which is what saved us. Myself?? My home is located about 12 miles from the epicenter<the beginning> of the quake. I was happily asleep in my bed and thought that the mortars were at training again, until my entire house started moving and the sound blasts stopped. My first thought was to try and get out of bed and find my daughter<my youngest was at home asleep in her bed, and my oldest was still at school, so I thought>. One of my neighbors freaked out so bad she brought her youngest and came running inside my house. Of course, we got lucky, and no one died in the quake<one woman died of a heart attack after the quake>. We had quite a few injuries, but thankfully none were that serious. All I can say is, I would rather have a fire, or tornado or hurricane than an earthquake anyday. At least with those you get some kind of warning.
