Ear Stretching

This question is for those experienced with gauging their ear piercings:

I've been working on stretching my ears for a little while now. I recently (about two weeks ago) moved up to a 6 gauge. This particular stretch was significantly more painful than any of the previous ones. Anytime before, it was uncomfortable, but not painful, and went away pretty quickly. I did use lotion, same as every time before, but this time it hurt A LOT, like a sharp piercing pain, and they were sore for about 24 hours.
I've been cleaning them, but I don't take them out to do so until I think they're fully adjusted, otherwise it's kind of uncomfortable. I had in the U-shaped hoops I use to stretch, and last night I took them out to switch to plugs.
But (and this grossed me out) they are finally large enough I can see inside the hole (not necessarily through, just in a little) and they still looked really raw. They aren't uncomfortable and I haven't had any grossness (discharge/smell) so I know they're healing fine, it's just the "rawness" of the skin grossed me out! And by grossed me out I should say I stared at them for a while in the mirror and then went to show my bf. *hehe*
Anyway, to the question, does it take longer to heal the larger you go? Was it more painful just because I'm getting into larger gauges now, or should that have not happened? I'm considering stopping at the 6 because of this. If it's going to hurt to go to a 4 and take even longer to heal I don't know if I really want to deal with that. So any advice/experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you don't get an answer here, may I recommend AskBME.com? I got a piercing question answered there, they're awesome.

I read BME pretty often, I just don't have a handle. My DJ at work is actually also a piercer and I know he could answer my question, I just don't see him till Monday.
I wasn't sure if I'd get a response or not, I just figured it was worth a shot...

You don't need to be a member to ask a question on AskBME, it's just an e-mail address. :)
