Okay all you piercing gurus...my daughter wants to get her ears pierced. She had it done two years ago at the mall and it wasn't a good experience. We ended up having to take the earrings out and the holes closed up. I am hesitant to take her back to Claire's to have it done again but Wal-Mart is the only other place in town that does ears. I can't imagine Wally World is an ideal place to do it either. So, I have been thinking about going to a body piercer just because I figure they have more experience and may do a better job. Is that overkill? Is a body piercing studio generally not an appropriate place for a 9 year old? Thanks!

Not overkill IMO. They will do it and will do a better job. Hollow piercing needles WILL NOT damage the tissue as much as a piercing gun and therefore you have less pain and less chance of infection.

Most piercing shops are fine for kids as long as they are with an adult.

i hope this experience goes much better for her.

Call. Most around here will, but they generally don't use the gun. The straight needle is better anyway.

People have already said it well, regarding the benefits of a piercing studio. Is it appropriate for a 9 year old? I don't see why not. When I got my hood piercing, I had a long conversation about music with a young man who had to still be in his teens (I look like I'm in my early 40s and not stand-out alternative or kinky), and also exchanged pleasantries with a fairly conservative looking neighborhood family who was bringing in their preteen girl to get her first ear piercing (baby and 5-year old in tow). Of course, I didn't share with them why I was there, and they didn't ask, either. (This is San Francisco, after all, LOL) :rose: Neon

Yes! Piercing studios will do general lobe piercings! Please for the love of god do NOT bring your children to those monsters with the plastic germ launchers also called "piercing guns".

Thanks Neon and Ammre. I thought I was being silly for considering a piercing studio but obviously I am not. LOL

Any tips on finding a reputable place? I know word of mouth is best but franky I don't know anyone that has piercings (that I know of ;) )
What kinds of things should I look for?

You're welcome! I go to Body Manipulations, which has a great reputation in San Francisco - learned of it through word of mouth.

I found this link on yahoo health - contains a list of questions to ask when doing your research.

Also BME has an FAQ for parents that includes guidelines for finding a good studio.

Good luck! :rose: Neon

I'd never considered using anyone but Claires, but I've been in peircing studios, and would have no problem taking my kids in one.

Edited to add: I'm gonna call and see if they do ear's. My middle girl turns six next month and I promised she could get her ears pierced.

Ok, B's definately going to a parlor to get her ears done.
