I'm not sure why, but ever since the publication of the Geek Pride Day stories there's been an unusual number of spam comments from alleged women or "loving girls" looking for love. Not just in response to the Geek Pride story but other stories too. It bums me out because I like getting the notification that someone's commented on my story and when I see it's just some spambot it's disappointing.

Other people experienced this on their stories recently?

On the upside, I will say I compliment the management for getting rid of these comments relatively quickly.

i know, she/they/it is hitting the comments section HARD. If you go to a category's comment feed you can see it is all over. Never saw that happen before

My 'eager women' comment was left on a Free Speech essay.

Deleted. :)

There are a lot of geek and gamer type dating sites/personals cropping up. Maybe the bot was drawn to the contest initially, but of course is spreading site wide.

I got one, but will leave it. The site will delete it soon now that they know its all over the place.

Admin have also been deleting them.

If you use the old panel, it says content removed

Sheesh. Y'all are some judgy bastards!

What if you're passing up your one chance at love? Huh? Have you thought of that?!

sigh.

The latest scam from West Africa is of women posting sexy videos and asking you to reciprocate with naked videos of yourself.

If you do? The video is used to blackmail you into paying substantial sums of money to stop the video being distributed to everyone on your contact list.

The same few women appear hundreds of times across multiple sites. The actual people posting those videos are gang members in slum areas.

It is estimated that over 50,000 people in the UK (sorry - 50,000 MEN) have been scammed by these criminals, and over a quarter of a million across Europe.

If she seems unbelievable? She probably is.

Hardly anybody spams me here. I feel neglected. My 1and1.com mail server effectively filters most spam so I'm not offered African women (or men). I feel lonely. I guess I'll have to build a 'bot to spam myself. But what's my clickbait? FREE HYPOXIA won't do.

LOL.

'Free Hypoxia' sounds like a change.org petition.

And to think . . . it all seemed so real.

Some don't even bother getting the video. I've had several emails from scammers claiming to have hacked my webcam (good luck hacking the tape over it!) and threatening to release a non-existent video unless I pay them off.

In a few years' time it'll be easier just to fabricate videos with CGI.

We're already there, aren't we? I'm not directing anyone to it, but I think it's good enough right now.

I think the key to preventing blackmail lies in two things. 1) webcams can go fuck themselves. Cameras on all devices blocked, covered, the mic covered, unplugged - completely under your control. and 2) Have no shame. Providing you're not hurting anyone or doing anything illegal... eh. Who cares. Who hasn't watched porn? Who are they going to expose you to, who's going to be surprised that you have sex/masturbate/watch porn? I wouldn't have a relationship with anyone who had a problem with porn, and I'd never lie to my partner about what I do/like/am. The blackmail is the crime there.

In a world where the US president pees on prostitutes, and no one blinks at his comments about sexual assault... what the fuck have we got to be ashamed of?

Even famous people don't give a shit anymore. "Oh, you hacked my dirty pics. Did you like them?"

That's the key. Only take flattering pics.

So, the spam-a-lam continues. How the heck can they control it, if they can't stop anonymous trolls? I've never seen this before... what usually happens?

It was weird - my latest story just got pushed about 10 minutes ago - isn't even on the new stories list, yet - but had one of those spams when I looked at my own listings page.

It must be on the Hub then. The Hub and new list dont post at the same time.

The technology exists, but I thought it was still at the point where it requires a significant amount of time by skilled users to create a video, which would make it not cost-effective for the average scammer targeting random people online. (I might be wrong, this isn't my area of expertise or anything.)

For high-value targets, absolutely.

A couple of decades ago one of our local councillors was seeking re-election.

Someone found a VHS video cassette of him performing in erotic scenarios. It was leaked to the local media.

A reporter approached the councillor and asked about it.

The response?

"Yes. That was me. It made me money to help fund my degree studies. It was enjoyable, and profitable at the time, but I wouldn't do it now."

Copies of the video circulated among the voters.

The result?

He was returned with an increased majority.

Was that for his honesty or the impressive size of his attribute?

Who cares? He didn't.
