Yeah, these are some of the downsides.

On the upside, there are far more books available that have a niche and reader interest than the print industry has been able to accommodate--and these now can be made available by e-book. And also, the e-book bookstore content makes it a lot easier for a reader/buyer to assess the books they are buying than the brick and mortar bookstores can do/have done.

Well, I have to say I'm glad to be aware of this. I mean, it hasn't been a problem for me, and I don't think I'm given to buying the types of books people use for this scam, but it doesn't hurt to be forewarned. I may start checking the free chapters; I don't right now.
