Dyslexics Untie!

Yes, SSS :D
And again some one has a really, really, poor concept of 'target audience'.
Just makes you want to laugh at their incompetence and ignorance.

Can those with horrible spelling and worse typos join?
If we can, I'm so in.!!!:D

I keep remembering the famous sad tale of the agnostic insomniac who suffered from dyslexia. Poor bastard stayed up all night wondering if there really was a dog.

I must point out, without anger but disappointment this misconception persists, that dyslexia is not equivalent to stupidity or being an idiot or racism or any of the other attributes that should come to mind when you read one of these White Power posts.

Dyslexia is a medical condition that makes school difficult if not tortuous for a lot of children. It is especially harsh in girls, since they often are diagnosed later in school and after their self-esteem has been battered longer.

Einstein and many other brilliant, successful people managed to thrive despite dyslexia.

As someone who loves someone with dyslexia I am sensitive to this.

This was a poor choice for a thread's title.

Not to say, Rumple's joke I still find funny despite the dyslexic in my life! :)

Ted-E-Bare, I enjoyed your post. Excellent points.

As for our white power poster, yes, it is getting tiresome. If it would at least post something new each time, there'd be some amusement in it, but it's the same old tired crap. It's growing dull.

(But on a related note - the SO and I agreed last night that "Same Old Tired Crap" would be a great title for a Lit story. ;) )

Thank you Shang. I've said before, and I'll say again, you are a very wise horse.

So, despite what you said in the other thread, I cannot believe you are Ann Coulter.

Don't make me come over there and give you some hot neo-whackjob monkey lovin' to prove it. ;)

My sincere apologies, truly.

The thread title was merely a play on the "White Power Unite" nonsense we've been seeing, and there was certainly no disrespect intended.

:rose:

(The dyslexic member of my family actually owned a shirt with the thread title.)

Ted-E-Bare,

I am deeply grateful to you for writing this post.

The International Dyslexia Association defines dyslexia as follows:

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.

Dyslexia is a lifelong disorder that can be treated but not cured.

By definition, children with learning disabilities are not stupid. Just the opposite is true. A learning disabled child exhibits a marked gap between his or her cognitive ability and performance in the classroom. The brain just works differently from most others.

Kids with learning disabilities have to work many times harder than other children, just to keep their heads above water academically. And at the same time, they face ridicule from their peers - due to a combination of ignorance and mean-spiritedness.

Ignorance.... because so many people equate learning disabilities with stupidity. Mean-spiritedness.... because for some reason people think it's ok to mock those who are less intelligent than they are.

Some kids are crushed by the struggle and constant assault on their self-esteem. Some rise above it - at times, spectacularly so. Chuck Schwab, John Chambers (Cisco), Richard Branson (Virgin), Ted Turner, Henry Ford, Walt Disney, William Hewlett, Paul Orfalea (founder of Kinko's), F.W. Woolworth, General George Patton, Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell all are/were dyslexic.

Thank you again, Ted-E-Bare, for your post on this thread.

Alice

P.S. - A plug for one of favorite authors...... Dr. Mel Levine, author of A Mind at a Time and All Kinds of Minds, pioneer in the field of child development, and outspoken advocate for kids with learning disabilities. Kids like my son, who was diagnosed as dyslexic when he was 8 years old.

You're a lovely person, SSS. :rose:

Yes, SSS, I could never be angry with you. As I said in the post, I wasn't angry, but did want to stop a reader from linking dyslexia to stupid. And I am famous for making free associations that are sometimes the wrong direction. So I do not judge. :)

And yes, like many bad things, a good way to deal, is with humor. Rumples God joke is one of my favorites.

Alice : thanks for the informative post. When I wrote mine, I was unable to think of any of the many dylexics other than Einstein (and Tom Cruise, but he does not help me make my point well--dyslexia does not cause jumping around on Oprah's couch).

And yes, Mel Levine is wonderful.

And a special place in hell for all the school administrators who strive to not educate the Special Ed children because of costs. Funny, they don't have a problem with giving special education dollars to the gifted.

I'd like 5 translated into British (sign language), perhaps with the second line changed to 'off'.

I'll see what I can find.

(My favorite is #4) :cathappy:

I think this is a nice light-hearted thread slightly intending to make fun of the racist white power crap threads which have been posted lately (the intent was definitely there, he, he)

And not an attempt to make fun of any disabililties (the intent was definitely not there)
