This is a shameless rip-off of Snoop Dog's classical music and opera in movies thread. As circumstance would have it, when I happened upon his thread, I'd just returned from the library with four DVDs selections inspired by our resident cognoscenti of culture and maven of serious literature, music and dance, Perdita--to wit,
  • Romeo and Juliet (The Royal Ballet w/ Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn)
  • Die Zauberflöte (The Met)
  • La Bohème (Zeffirelli -- I hope this doesn't blow like his version of R&J)
  • Lakme (The Australian Opera Chorus & The Elizabethan Sydney Orchestra)

So, the question at hand is, have any of you been moved to rent/ borrow/ buy or steal any movies, books theatre tickets etc. by suggestion and/or example of Perdita?

just want to say...

Rudolf N. is the bomb!

Dude can fuckin' gliiiiide. I worked on my dancing in high school, etc. at least partially due to a comment I heard about telling what a guy is like in bed by his dancing. ( it is all selfish at heart, ya know. if good dancer = more chicks, I was taking lessons Dude! )

If that is at all true, I am glad I never had to compete for a woman with Nureyev.

No problemo, hombre; he was gay gay gay! I adored him, saw him in his prime and at the end (when he could still command a stage by merely standing still). Ooh, I'm gonna go all weepy.

Like my ballet teacher said once, while we discussed a Rudy performance, "I thank God he put me on the earth at the same time as that man."

Perdita

Quilty: I almost forgot to mention this. In the balcony scene Nureyev kisses Fonteyn with the most amazingly tender and passionate articulation (of his body and movement) possible sans Shakespeare's words. (That's an awkward sentence but I don't fee like editing now.) I must get my DVD out and watch it. P.

Alas, Tommy Tune notwithstanding, I was too tall to have ever considered the study of serious dance.

Taller than Alexander Godunov? Ah, but he did have a hard time finding partners. P.

I've heretofore only heard statements of this kind associated with Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. :p

I don't know. Is Godunov 6' 6½"? I'm too burly for dance as well.

That would make an intersting topic all it's own.

Clare: Who/what movie or ?? is your AV pic from?

He was 6 foot only (maybe 6'1"). It's not just height and weight though, proportions are requisite. That's for classical ballet, different for other dancing. P.
