I just went to the grocery for some goodies, and got back home to find out that my Ben and Jerry's Phish Food Ice Cream is actually Phish Food Frozen Yogurt! Argh!

The weird thing is, I should have known. I have a Ben and Jerry's ritual. I always pick up the flavor I want, turn it around, read the fat grams, and put it back. Then I choose a yummy sorbet instead. This time I read the label, noted the 5 grams of fat per serving, multiplied it by the four servings in the pint, and felt satisfied with the results. That should have been my warning sign, but I did not even recognize it as an impostor!

I'm almost afraid to try it, but I feel an obligation to do so, just for the sake of science, if nothing else. Also to punish myself for being so delusional and naive. I'll let you know how it goes...

Seriously! I think they should be required by law to put the word FAKE in huge print across the front, and around the lid in brightly colored lettering. The packaging is virtually identical!

I actually like Ben and Jerry's frozen yogurt. Cherry Garcia, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and English Toffee Crunch are my faves.

If only they made the White Russian in frozen yogurt.

I does have marshmallowy goodness. The caramel stripe is creamy and sticky and good. The little fudge fishies are smiling for all they're worth.

But.


The texture of the actual matrix within which the other goodies are suspended is but a paltry comparison to the original. It has a grainy texture instead of slickery smoothness, and the lack of fat content seems to be a real detriment to the impact the flavor makes on my palate.

I give it a C-.

Bleh.

That's the thing! It did make it a more attractive purchase. Too bad the product doesn't live up to expectations, though. The texture is such a letdown. Luckily, they pack so much other stuff into the icecream itself, that it's easy enough to avoid it. I'm going to eat out all the marshmallow and caramel and fishies and leave the yogurt. That will be my triumph over those charlatans, Ben and Jerry!
