Has anyone thrown around the possibility of another civil war? I don't want one, but I was just curious if it's possible one could break out?

God knows it's better than acknowledging the possibility of an honest difference of opinion. Just think what that could lead to.

An honest difference of opinion is often acknowledged . . . and then dismissed.

Do the last two posts seem vaguely Orwellian or is it just the four-leggedness of the posters? ;)

If George Orwell was alive, he'd never make it out of my bedroom in that condition.

Stage 2: Asking "are you a moron?"

The problem is I think, that we've acknowledged that we have differences of opinion, but now we're clashing worldviews. The extreme right can't fathom why so many people are traitors to God and country and so sillingly cavort with Satan and the extreme left wonders what inbred hicks could be so thick to reality and compassion.

And so they're both "climbing up the treetops, shouting out rude names" as Peter Gabriel put it in "Games without Frontiers".

And before Civil War I'd really like to see a honest debate about a 4 party political party system being raised instead. Extreme Right, Moderate Right, Moderate Left, and Extreme Left. I think it could work.

But if we do break up into little chibi countries, at least I'll live in one of the couple of countries that'll still be able to compete in the Global Economy (California rates pretty high on the Richest Countries List as a mere State). Plus it'll be the only country with a pot leaf on the national flag.

 He was kind of hot. ;)

And I though editing was a pain for me. Check out Orwell's problem with the opening of 1984. Oy! Thank god for MS Word!

Amazing. It's hard to imagine how anyone got anything written before mechanical typing, at least.

On the other hand, as one who is often delighted to be able to compare variants and drafts of published works, I wonder what we lose through electronic deletion. Sometimes looking at the genesis of a work reveals very interesting things.

Have you seen my Orwellian thread?

Hi SIMA,

Yes, I did check out the thread and the website! My favorite part was under the Contact Us section: "We already know what you're thinking." :D

Clever stuff. I love how Afghanistan is marked out and Iraq is penciled in as who we "have always been at war with." :D

True. It's pretty bad when people think Deliverance is a documentary.

Actually, in many ways it is. I went to the same college as James Dickey. There really is a large man-made lake there that was made by damming a river, and someone did once say to me, without a trace of irony, "Yew ain't frooom round here, are yah?"

OK, stupid but honest question - Is it really that unusual to find large man-made lakes made from dammed rivers?

Not in New England. They're all over the place. A lot of them are old mill ponds. Up north, they're all used for power.

Sorry, no - didn't mean it was. Only that he did go to my college, and the lake was created around that time.
