I'm at toys-r-us doing a little bit of christmas shopping and luckily its not to hectic I pick out a leap frog reading thingy for my son and a storybook for it so I goes to pay for it and I politely ask the cashier if she could tell me how much it came up to just to make sure I had enough money to purchase it and she looks at me and says sorry I can't and I'm looking at her like WHAT THE FUCK?????? I then wanted to throw the fucking thing at her and say next time get some better service and walk the FUCK OUT dammit but I bit my tongue and sarcastically said to her if I don't know what it comes up to with all THIS damn TAX then I can't very well purchase it now can I??? she reluctantly rings it up and amazingly just by a hair I have enough I'm telling ya in the christmas spirit is it just to much to ask for some decent service??

Go someplace where they have scanners at strategic points throughout the store.

I worked retail for 8 years.

In defense of the cashier, it's possible that if she rang you up "on spec" so to speak, if you then didn't follow through with the purchase, she would have needed a manager to authorize voiding the transaction... thus infuriating the long line behind you.

You couldn't have estimated the total?

Shoppers... do bear in mind that the cashiers often are just following company policy, are making minimum wage, and have been dealing with often surly and hostile customers for weeks.

I can't tell you the number of times I was bitched at because we were out of the sale items. "Well, sir, in my spare time when I manage the buying and stocking for the entire store chain...." Sheesh.

My favorite? "Don't you have any of these left in the stock room?"

The answer I always wanted to give: "Yes, ma'am, we prefer to keep our most requested merchandise in the stockroom, to discourage sales, as opposed to keeping the sales floor stocked."

Cashiers... it's almost over. Just smile at those angry and hostile customers. The nastier they are, the sweeter you can be, and make them look like the total jerks they are.

It's a good thing I'm putting in my 2 week notice in my retail store on Thursday...then I have friday off and I am on a 2 week vacation starting Saturday...so thursday will be my last day of work. :)

Wow, you get to miss the day after Christmas (otherwise known as hell on earth for cashiers) that way...

Good thinking.

I requested it off about 4 months ago...I went through it last year...this year I'm saying fuck retail and fuck work.

Absolutely. And working as a cashier is a totally thankless job. You get blamed for long lines, high prices, broken merchandise, and a whole lot of other things that you have no control over. It's miserable.

Why is it the cashier's fault that you are too stupid to add 2 items together?

Why is it the cashier's fault that you don't know how much money you have?

Dumb fucks that hold up lines asking for subtotals are the ones that are the pain in the ass.

Welfare moms buying toys that start at $60.00 + and get all uppity are the worst.

Tempt, Cibo, foxxy I commend ya for the job you do, there wasn't any line and considering how little I shop I don't think I was being too demanding in just asking for a decent attitude about the whole thing and RegisteredTroll FECK OFF i'm usually quite decent at subtotalling shite just ask RUDENASTYASSBITCH, its the $20 or so dollars' of tax added on to an item that's costing $80 or so dollars' and I didn't know it was a CRIME for welfare mothers to try and provide their KIDS with the best christmas they can even if it is only 1 really expensive gift they can afford FUCKWAD.....

Here's one.....

Shopping one day at a grocery store, I had 1 item....okay....it was a case of beer....when I was the next customer...the power went out......thus the electronic cash registers were out as well.....

The manager announced to the cashiers to use the keys to open the tills and conduct business as usual, provided them with calculators, and write down each sale....subtotal, and sales tax, and the total for each customer. (this was back in the day of actual price tags on products)

My luck......the kid at the cash register (actually about 23-or 24), could not figure out how to arrive at a total with the calculator..(being a by-product of the public school system ya know)

Patiently, I told him to multiply the subtotal of the purchase by 1.078, and that would be the total....he looked at me dumbfounded and asked...."but how do I figure out the sales tax??"......

So next time the argument is raised about increasing the minimum wage, then perhaps we should strongly opine about the inability of the present workforce to understand the basic principles of math, or the inability to understand a "big mac meal with a coke", and you wind up with a cheesburger and a sprite.

I have worked retail before, and I try my best to be as courteous as the courteousy I'm given. But a minimum wage job is designed to give people a start in the working environment, not provide them with the ability to purchase a home, and buy that shiny new $30,000 car..

Damn....I think I just went off on a tirade!!!

Thankyou so much for this Temptress, it saved me having to post something similar...

I work in a toy store (No not Toys'r'us, but still a real busy store here in the UK) and there we have the same problem, I can't (not being management) ring things through the till that aren't being purchased for a price check, I don't have the ability on my password to allow me to void them back off if the customer changes her/his mind.

I also get alot of the "Stockroom" question.. it drives me mad, though we do try to accomodate people by going to look if we have just had a delivery in... if we can spare the staff that is!

Roll on the end of Jan is all I say - there is too much shopping-rage out there... <sigh>
