So I was driving down the road on the way to the store to pick up a few things this evening. My wife was with me and we were talking as we approach the park by our house. It's a four lane road with the park on the left and houses on the right.

The car to my right started to slow unexpectedly and as I passed I spied a moma duck and five little baby ducks trying to cross the road to get back to the park. I applied my brakes looking in my rear view mirror to see how close the car behind me was.

Well she was really close and had a hard time stopping without hitting me. I even allowed my car to go farther forward than I would have. The moma duck herded her ducklings back to the right and up on the grass. I was stopped now as I watched what the ducks were going to do.

The car behind me honked her horn at me. I started up and the car next to me turned right at the next side street. The woman behind me changed lanes and was next to us at the next light. She rolled down her window and yelled...

"So you're going to cause a five car pile up for some ducks?"

I yelled back...

"So you would kill ducks to keep from wearing you brakes out, bitch?"

Of course she didn't hear me as she had her window rolled up then.

Now I wish she would have hit me...let her explain to the cops how she was following too close and not paying attention to what was going on in front of her.

Bitch.

...when we were coming back from the store we stopped at the park to check on the ducks...she made it back with all her children.

Good job, Zeb.
I also stop for turtles. And risk getting run down myself to get them across the road.

You get prosecuted around here for hitting ducks.

But I would stop even if it wasn't against the law.

I even stop for geese, which are completely overpopulated in this area.

Well done! The woman i guess wasnt an animal lover...I'd always stop for animals Esp Ducks!

I've never considered hitting an animal with an automobile ethical hunting. Besides, the baby ducks will be so much fatter in November.

Not that I'd ever manage to hit any, anyhow. Carry on, baby ducks!

So do I. The Gopher Tortise here in Florida is close to an endangered species thanks to unrestrained development destroying them and their habitat. I always help one across the road.

And I also stop for ducks, Sandhill Cranes, snakes, crabs and gators.

The last one is pretty much a must.

Lizards are another one here - particularly on spring mornings, they think roads are there specifically for sunning themselves on.

And I hate driving after rain at night - the frogs are often unavoidable.

When it rains more than an inch here, the frogs, toads and crabs go into full mating mode. They're all over the place and the noise is deafening. You have to watch for the crabs on the roads tho, you may squash one, but it's fighting claw will go thru a steel belted radial like a bayonet. :(

The only thing you have to worry about running down here is small children and loose cats. I've only hit one of the latter and none of the former, thank God. Damn, I hate hitting an animal . . .

The way I used to drive to work had a duck crossing. Well, not like a sign that said let the ducks cross but a place the ducks really liked crossing the street. Anyway, they tended to cross during commute times. Traffic would stop while they would start crossing, then sometimes they'd just stop in the middle of the road. Most people would just wait patiently. I'd go slow enough they could get out of the way, but still let them know I wouldn't wait forever. Although there was also a woman who got out and shooed them to the side of the road.

Although when I lived in California I almost got hit by a duck a couple of times. I don't know if you've been close to a flying duck, but they book! Oh, and they don't swerve if you're walking down the middle of their flight path.

There was this time down in Kentucky, we were driving down this dirt road, well most of the roads were dirt, and this Vulture was sitting in this tree by the side of the road. The branch, a big limb really, it was sitting on hung out across the road. Everyone in the car was pointing and ow and ah'ing as we approached the tree with the Vulture.

This damn bird must have been four feet tall, with a wingspan of eight feet, a big MF bird. As we approached it decided to take off. Now take off for a bird that size is a swoop. They dive for the ground and pull up and guess what was in it's flight path...you guessed it my car.

It didn't hit hard, just a brushing incident. A plump of feather dust followed the misguided fowl into the air.

I really thought I was going to have Vulture guts and feather all over the place.
