I hope this is where I am supposed to post this. I know nothing about DSL. Is there a way to run more then one computer a time on a dsl line? Using the same DSL modem, or would you need to have more then one modem?

I'm probably talking out of my ass here, but if I recall, if you tell your DSL provider that you have two computers, they can set up a router system and assing you separate IP numbers for both.

Dont tell your dsl company.,they will charge you more.

Go buy a router or a switch and some RJ-45 wire and hook it up yourself.

There are how to instructions all over the net,do a google search and they will pop up.

Actually it depends on your DSL provider. I'm not really all that clear on the policy but I worked for one and have service through another. The one I worked for didn't charge extra if you have more than one computer, they will sell you a router that they support and even (as of recently) offer technical support. That particular company offers service in the united states.

I live in Canada and the company that offers DSL here has the same policy (although I'm not sure if they offer technical support for the router as I"ve never needed technical support). Just make sure the router you select supports DHCP - that way you don't need more than one IP address from the ISP.

At the beginning, I started a thought with "I'm not really clear on the policy"

What I meant by this was, I'm not really sure of the policy of this board as I was going to mention both the Internet service providers I am familar by name and I wasn't sure of the policy.

I clear on the policy of the company I worked for and the company I have service though.

yes you will need a router they come fairly cheap around $60 sometimes less but if you want to get something easy and if you got money to burn they have wireless routers so you dont have to have annoying wires running every which way.but it depends if your other computer is close to the one with DSL go for a normal if its a great distance away and you dont want wires go for wireless

The long and short of all that is that nowadays, most DSL providers (or all providers I've come in contact with) allow you to network. Just ask them when you order the DSL which Routers they support. That makes life much simpler down the road.

Yes, it's possible and although a router is the best way to go, it is NOT required.

If you Dad networks his computer to your brother's and sets the netwrking to "share internet connection" he can use the internet connection as long as you brother's computer is on.

Your brother's computer would NOT have to be turned on with a router set-up.

Either way, your dad's computer and your brother's need to be networked to each other, or to the router.

You can run DSL over more than one computer with a router. Look for either a Cisco 675/678 or Actiontec 1520. Those are both pretty good routers outside the DLink/Linksys junk realm...you'll need RJ-45 cable to go from the router. The only issue comes in extra static IPs, sometimes you have to get them through your DSL provider and sometime they're provided with your setup.

Like people have said, search for DSL router network, there is a ton of info on this...

I would feel more comfortable having a router do the work instead of the hardware of the end-user computer, but that's just my preference...

The Actiontec 1520 is a wireless-ready router...I think you can find it for around $199 through some distributors...
