DragonCon

I wish I could go, I havnt been to a game convention in years... I hope you have fun. Do you plan to play while your there?

I don't play at all, so no I won't be, but I know it goes on!

EDIT: wait, I bet you meant games, right? not that other thing?

I won't have time for those either...

LOL!! No, I don't think I'll have time for gaming. I didn't see anything in the pocket program that looked appealing anyway...I am a board game sort with minor RPG tendencies, and the board game pickin's looked mighty slim this year!

I think RPGs have had a hard time for a while since Wizards of the Coast painted themselves into a corner with the d20 system.
I dont get to game much now, but as soon as I can shed this layer of skin that is my current job (currently working on getting something else going that will allow me much more freedom)... well be saving the universe at least one night a week.

I now have Evil_Geoff's cell phone number. He is going. SWEET

I'd love to go, but, as usual, can't afford it.
Me neither. Like seriously cannot afford it.

But at 10am Friday - about 36 hours from now - I will be interpreting for William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

I have decided I don't give a shit how much this trip costs. Interpreting for those two will be the pinnacle of my career. I wouldn't be this excited about interpreting for the president. I'm fucking STOKED.

Okay, wow. No, WOW. That is immensely, incredibly awesome. I would leap at that chance as well.

Good on ya!

Fortunately the professor for the one class I have to miss (schedule weirdness; changing my flight would cost $600) is also a geek and feels the same way. :)

That's great!

Congrats.

That's cool too. I would hope that most college professors would be cool with something like that. Shatner and Nimoy, c'mon.

Yeah, he said it's "not the worst" excuse he's ever heard. LOL.

That is soooo cool. I have to say of all the people that Ive seen at game conventions and festivals... those two, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy would easily be the best (if I were to see them together), beating out various authors and lesser known stars of lesser known stars. I know your going to have a blast, I just wanted to say how really, really neat it must be to meet them both.

OH MY GOD SPOCK. I would die. And then come back from the dead. And then try to hug him.

What an amazing opportunity!! Enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity. :cattail:

That sounds like serious fun. Are you able to capture changes in the tone of their voices? Or inflection patterns? Or are those elements communicated through facial expressions and gestures?

(It's kind of fun to imagine how the contrasting tone of their voices could influence the signing. :D)

Etoile, that's seriously freaking cool. Also, you do realize, that your trip is probably tax deductible, if you are self employed as an interpreter. :)

Check with a real accountant. But you basically just said you would not be going unless you were working.

ASL is just as fully nuanced as spoken English, so yes, all of that is captured in the interpretation. :)

They spoke almost on top of each other the whole time so it was very hard to keep up! I am (SLOWLY) uploading pics and video to my Flickr account.

That's an excellent point! It is tax-deductible. I do declare myself as self-employed on my taxes. And it's quite true, I would not be here if I was not interpreting.
