I have know a lot of rich people. They were well grounded, not covetous of others and very much comfortable in their own skin. Rich people ARE working people. that is how they get rich. Unless they inherit it ad that is usually gone bt the third generation.

Why don't you get together for a beer with King Orfeo. He is in your area more or less. He is "the rich" and gets that way running up the insurance premiums of the working man, and believes in socialism just like you!

Yes that meme has been thouroughly debunked. It was started to try to bury the shame about the Democratic Party's strong racist roots and strong opposition to civil rights for blacks.
If it was even remotely true, why is it that these racist Democrats that allegedly all jumped ship for the Republican Party did not help the Republicans make inroads into power for a couple of decades after the racist Democrats allegedly joined with them?

No one disputes that it was the Democrats at the time on the wrong side of the issue. The dissatisfaction that racist Democrats may have had with Johnson after he agreed to modify his racist position for political reasons would have been enough to make them hate him, but not love the Republicans pushing for Civil Rights. Goldwater understood that the camels nose under the state's right tent would be far reaching and his statements to that effect were used by Johnson for political gain. Johnson was well known for his personal racist views.

But keep repeating that the Democrats have been the champions of racial equality for the last 200 years. Maybe someone will be naive enough to believe that is remotely possible, given their sordid history.

It is exactly like ad campaigns like 'GMC is professional grade.' GM trucks are crap which is why businesses that keep maintenance records on their fleet do not keep GM in their fleets. SO, that being the root of GM's problem, the ad campaign that they are worth of consideration by contractors is born. This is how "the other guys are RACISTS!" was born. Used to be the Democrats said Republicans were racist for wanting to reform welfare, as if only blacks were on welfare. When that was pointed out they quietly dropped that charge.

The election of the first republican president, Abe Lincoln, was the opening shot of the civil war. He was elected in the face of a united south that stated that if he was elected there would be trouble on a national scale.

It was not for the sake of the slaves, he was elected to secure the cotton from the south and force the southern cotton growers to send their cotton to mills in the north instead to the mills in england. Freeing ONLY the slaves inside the states in revolt, the emancipation proclamation was issued to keep england from offering its support to the south. If the british had broken the blockade allowing for its manufactured goods to inter the south, the war might have had a different outcome.

The republicans have never been on the side of the black man.

The democrats did represent the interest of the wealthy plantation then and after the war. When the north took over and the carpetbaggers used the black vote to take over white lands and subdue the white south. Many of the whites began to hate blacks when in reality the blacks were just the weapon the rich was using against them.

The southern white man saw the black man as a threat. While his fear of the black man had been based on a fear of a slave uprising. His fear of the black mans political power was not a prejudice, it was based on experience gained during the carpetbagger days.

The klan was at its strongest just after the end of the carpetbaggers. A fact that some people are not aware of is the role that the klan played in the lives of communities other then as racial bullies. For instance if you were a wife beater or suspected of being a child molester you could receive a visit one night and carry the scars of your whipping for sometime.

Most klans worked out of churches and many pastors were members and saw themselves as pillars of the community. The klan existed to make everybody stay within a set of behaviors that the community approved of. When civil rights starting to cross those lines the klan became more racially motivated.

Calm down now, I know you are already typing how I am a grade one asshole to try and tell you the klan ain't racist. I agree that it is racist and always has been but the racial aspects were not their only purpose in the beginning.

After the civil rights acts were passed the people who had worked against them became republicans and took their kids out of public schools. Churches all over the south built schools and in so doing put themselves firmly in the right wing racist wing of the republican party.

That wing has continued to grow and strengthen and now it may well be on the brink of assuming control over the more sensible wing of the party. Vetteman is thrilled by this but a guy as smart as you can see that that is not a good thing for the party or america.

Query, I made my living working for myself doing cars for people on their property with them looking over my shoulder. A car would take three to four weeks to do so I got to talk with a lot of interesting people who ran their own shops or were fairly successful or they couldn't afford me to work for them.

I never worked for a rich man, only well off men. The really rich men are a rare breed seen more on TV then in real life.

What would me and Mitt have to talk about? I could tell him about street rods and he might explain how I could avoid some taxes but niether of us would be listening to the other. There would be no common ground between us.

I got to really know marines in 1965 in the dominican republic. I was a rifleman guard on a machine gun stationed in a sandbag hut on a street corner in downtown Santo domingo. A group of marines had a machine set up on a roof top two blocks away. Suddenly they started to spraying the street with machine fire. the ammo bearer and I managed to get the kids inside of a barber shop and out of the line of fire. We never found out why it happened but the people on that block sent us out home cooked meals for the rest of the time we stayed there as thanks for saving their kids.

I guess I owe those marines, home cooking beat c-rations every time.

Later the marines were sent in to replace us so we could have some R&R. In one day they lost eighteen blocks of real estate. It took us two days to get it back. So experiences with marines have taught me a couple of things
