Missle sights and communications have been bombed, special forces have engaged Iraqi troops...the troops, the armour, the carriers are all in position...the first strike will be in the month...my prediction less than a two week war. The aftermath a few months of unrest... and hopefully the French interests..completely wiped out, the Germans, still groveling for a piece of the pie, NATO effective a dead organization and a new Kurdistan state right next to our "friends" in Turkey.

And Shia's in the south angling to merge with Iran? Kurd protests against the U.S. for not immediately defending them against attacks from the Kurds?

The truth is that keeping Iraq intact probably is better for the United States but it will be hard to do that with the power vacuum that will exist after Saddam is brought down. And what to do with Saddam and the so called "filthy forty?" Hoping that they are all killed in battle is probably too much to hope for. Execution? That's a violation of U.S. law. Extradition to the United States for trial? That might be a violation of international law? To stand trial in Iraq? Might happen but what would the end result be?

Thereare so many unanwered questions, so much money involved and probably a decades long occupation of Iraq in the works.

Might not be enough to win over all the hearts and minds in the U.S. before the next election when people ask "Why is the economy doing so poorly?"

Let's not forget North Korea. They might attack South Korea, convinced that they are next if the U.S. makes invasion their foreign policy.

Less than two weeks, eh? We'll see. I predict the war will "open the gates of hell" and unleash a tidal wave of violence and terror, especially in the Middle East. The shaky U.S. client states in the area will likely be overthrown. Israel will probably try to drive out the Palestinians altogether.

The big wild card is: how much protest will take place here, and how militant will it be? How savage and thorough will the police state repression be?

The Taliban evaporated into the crowds and became the Afghan victims of an oppressive regime. In other words, they're still there. It will take a very long U.S occupation in the area and huge strengthening of the whatever native Afghan force that replaces the old regime. It hasn't worked in the past for any military in history given the chieftain and warlord system throughout the country. Don't expect it will work this time. Only Kabul will remain relatively safe.

As for Iraq, it is sheer arrogance to say that forty people are all dead in a week. If they surrendered to say, Australian forces, it is highly unlikely they would be executed. And if the U.S. executes the people they capture, that information will get out. If there are any among that forty that believes no matter what they will do, they will die, might convince them to use whatever means at this disposal to kill Americans. That could be weapons of mass destruction or blowing up dams and oil rigs, or killing any captive Americans.

Seems a bad idea to violation the Geneva Convention and be the pariah's of the world.

There won't be time for protests...There are very few Militants here who even have the ability to fight. However if this does not go well..ie like Desert Storm..it will be the end of Bush's political career.

They will be killed by Iraqi's...parts of the military will switch sides...the CIA have been working this for sometime...

No time for protests? There are already protests planned for the day war escalates. Also, Desert Storm went "well," at least in terms of being a quick victory for the U.S., with few casualties, but Bush, Sr. still got voted out of office the next year.

Wow.

This post was intelligible.

I'm almost . . . disappointed.

Mark my words, if there is one thing the Bush family knows about, it's fucking the Kurds in the ass. This will be no exception.
