I just submitted a story to a site where they told me that it would take 5 months just for them to let me know if my story was going to be accepted at all, plus a further few weeks delay for them to actually post it on the site.

It sort of makes it appear that they're very exclusive. Probably just inefficient. They have pretty good stories (no erotica though, so I'm not sure if they'll take my stuff)

That's actually not that bad as far as publication goes. It depends on how exclusive the place is. I think you should still go for it and tell them that you're also submitting it to other places. That means they'll be pressured to accept your piece before somewhere else accepts it.

Don't feel like the lone ranger. I have been submitting novels to a few sites and the standard time for acceptance/rejection is 120 days = four months.
