Doms, do you have a "type"?

Just curious. My Dom has had past subs that ranged across a spectrum of what type of play they were into. In discussing it he said something along the lines of that he enjoys engineering the play, getting inside his sub's head, discovering what makes her tick..and he can enjoy evolving that, building with those blocks, whatever they may be. Versus needing a sub who has particular preferences that agree with the kinds of activities he might like to perform on her.

Just curious how many others are more like my Dom, and how many (if any) instead have a specific type of sub that they prefer.

And FYI not talking about personality compatibility, or attitude, simply BDSM play preferences. Obviously everyone has personality/attitude types that they are drawn to.

I found this article quite useful in helping to articulate my own preferences:

Dominant Types and their submissive Counterparts | A submissive's journey

I fit the profile of an Equalitarian Dominant (as opposed to an Authoritarian Dominant or a Democratic Dominant):

The Equalitarian Dominant is one who controls by teaching, mentoring and leading. ...

Of course, these distinctions are only guidelines and should not be considered as prescriptive or limiting. Each Dom is an individual and may not precisely fit any of these categories.

In my current search for a compatible sub, it's useful for me to understand and recognise some corresponding sub characteristics. For example:

- Both the Dominant and the submissive "get it", need very little, so called "training" and naturally know what the other needs after interaction. ... These are the ones who claim to be born this way, have always been this way. They fully understand the concept of D/s - it comes to them naturally and easily.

- ... a submissive who truly and naturally wants to please, and who will observe and sense what the dominant is communicating; and be able to translate that into the right thing to do.

- She "wants" to as a result of the Dominant's knowledge and skill at Dominating. Sensuousness is the rule and pain is given and received as a form of sensuous stimulation. Light pain as opposed to severe. Sensuous torture is a popular activity in this area.

Hope that helps a bit! :)

I, too, seem to fit the egalitarian archetype here, though depending on the partner's needs I suppose I can at times lean a little more to another archetype from time to time, or when the situation appears to merit it. Of course, as the transition to authoritarian or democratic tends to follow some very clear communication and the sincere interest of behalf of one or both parties to ensure that this satisfies both parties sufficiently, I guess that is sort of an equalitarian trait as well.
