“That’s a grand idea,” Josephine agreed. “As you said earlier, it’s not as if Karen will sit all day while you paint her. Perhaps you could do some less ambitious renderings of Michele along the way.”

Seize the Night

"Where has Gus gotten off to now?" Karen asked aloud, her brow furrowed with puzzlement. "For that matter, where is Uncle Ian?"

Karen followed her eyes into the kitchen, but found it empty. Officer Green, with a cop's habit of observation, had said "slipped out the back." Karen crossed the large room and went out the door by the morning-room.

A set of stairs led down to the lawn. She crossed this toward the swimming pool. There, in the wavering blue light shining up through the water, she saw them. Neither wore any clothes.

Uncle Ian stood over Samantha, who sat on a chaise lounge, her hand casually stroking his stiff member. In the dark, they had not noticed her. Karen spun around, her fists balled, ready to charge back into the house.

She realized, however, that she had no right to anger. She had no claim over Uncle Ian, and Samantha had simply done what Karen wanted to do. Josephine had always taught her to think of any setback not as a problem, but a new opportunity.

Karen turned back to the pool, stepped out of her shoes, and pulled off her socks. Evening dew cooled the grass under her bare feet. She started across the lawn, leaving a trail of clothes. By the time she appeared at the edge of the pool, she wore only her short gray skirt.

Josephine and Michelle are talking with the artist and every one else of interest has left, so tell me your life story Mary and then I will tell you some outrageous lies about mine," he chuckled.
