I'm surprised no one has started bitching about the US working with dolphins on mine detection in the Gulf.

Apparently they stick heavy magnets onto the dolphins - they can then clear the mine fields pretty quickly

They also use seals to divert in coming misiles onto ships.

The seals lead the missile a bit of a dance - OK not a nice way to go

Better than those movies where the navy SEALS form commando teams and go into a miltary compund.

wait....
seals? nah!

See now, this is information I wish I didn't know.

Sorry:(

They (Coast Guard, Navy) have been working with dolphins for years. They have helped in many things, not just mine detectors.

I honestly am not trying to sound like a condescending dick, but, you know they don't actually wear magnets, right?

Here's a link, explaining what they do.

Ha thats what they tell the public.

They also are fully trained in arm to fin combat -

actually I heard the seals were trained to seek out enemy divers and clamp them with some device so they get towed in by the defending ships- pretty cool

Arm to fin maybe, but, that last is completely false!
They use tractor-squids, duh!

I'm with Ruby on this one.

I understand, but let me ask you this, are you opposed to bomb sniffing dogs, also?

I think the difference is, the dolphins don't have handlers, per say?

I dunno, I am such an animal nut, that anything that puts them in danger for OUR gain, bothers me.

But I understand why they need them.

Make sense?

Completely. I wasn't trying to be in your face, I was just curious. Thank you for answering.

According to the article, the dolphins don't get too close to the mines.

"Tillotson said the dolphins were trained not to swim up to mines, but to place a marker a small distance away, minimizing any danger to themselves."
