big salami said:Hey minxy, he's a super looking boy, I used to do a lot of work for Great Dane Rescue back in the 1980's when I was still showing, breeding and judging Danes, they are a superb breed and I always wanted to own one from when I was a li'l boy, eventually had loads of 'em and now I have none again. The only downside to having a Dane is the relatively short life span, that was hard to bear.
minxy69 said:Hi BS,
Zak's my 3rd Dane, my first only lived till 5, my second managed almost 13 tho! It is hard tho, knowing they aren't going to be here that long! He really is a sweetie tho...not had the best start in life, but he's here now, and he's staying!
big salami said:My first Dane was only 6 when we lost her to the dreaded bloat, she gave us a lovely litter though when mated to a show champ, her babies had 26 Champs in all on their 4 generation pedigrees!
I did a good deal of research and found their line went back to Ch Elch Elder of Ouborough in many places, Elch Elder, owned by Joe Braddon is the only Dane (so far) to have won Supreme Champ at Crufts.
Here's one of my babes!

This little one was not long out of mums womb and I was waiting for another to emerge, I laid back in the whelping box and it crawled up my shirt. My wife had a camera to record each as they were born, (a litter of 13!) so she snapped this as the baby crawled out the top of my shirt!!
minxy69 said:Aw, Dane pups are just soooo sweet!
That's the only thing that bugs me about Zak, I have no history for him, I'd love to know where he came from, however, it's one of the things when you take a rescue. I love him anyway! lol
big salami said:You shouldn't worry about stuff like that as long as you love him hun, Pedigrees are really not important unless you are thinking of showing him or using him at stud, neither of which are really to be recommended believe me.
Can enter him in some exemption shows still however!

minxy69 said:Morning BS..just lol!
I just want him to have a great life with me, so the pedigree isn't important, you're right, it's just me, having had Danes before, who turned out to be from the same lines some way back, I'm interested to know..but it's not vital! He's lying flat out alongside me right now, taking up most of the floor space, lol!!
Hope your day is going well?

big salami said:From the look of him I would say there's a good deal of the "Dicarl" line in him.
I am not involved in the Dane world anymore and have lost touch with all my Dane friends but they and the "Walkmyll" line were the best known in those days, I was "Saxondane" but didn't breed as extensively as those people although we did start making a bit of a name after a while.
One of the dogs that I found interesting in some lines was a dog that was brought back as a mascot from Germany in the early 1950's.
Other names that were famous, going back a bit were "Moonsfield" "Timellie" "Oughborough" of course as I have already mentioned which was the late great Joe Braddon and "Clausentum" which was started by Hilda Lanning and carried on by her daughter, Jean who became very well known as an "All Round" Judge and writer of books about Danes and other breeds too.
Happy days but lots of work too.

minxy69 said:When I got my first Dane as a puppy, I got Jean Lanning's book, and still rely on it quite often now!
Both my other Danes had an awful lot of Tovayne blood in them...I do recognise most of the names you've mentioned tho.
In between the Danes I've had GSD's...bit of a pattern building lol!
Hope Hector is doing well, and Blaze looks fantastic...wow!![]()
big salami said:Tovayne was a lady called Eva Bratton from Hartlepool, she specialised in Blue and Black Danes but in order to keep the colours pure it's neccessary to have some Fawn or Brindle input somewhere, it's all to do with Dominant and reccesive genes and that reminds me of another subject entirely!!
This pic is obviously an American or European Dane as his ears have been cropped (A horrible thing to do to any animal, tail docking's bad enough!)
I knew someone once who kept Danes and Chihuahuas, guess who were the dominant breed there?? LOL

No dog is comfortable with anything that can or does run underneath them, it has some very vulnerable spots under there!!
minxy69 said:Lol, that's so funny!
Yes my first boy was black, gorgeous lad he was, my second fawn, she was a really special lady. They're all special I know, in their way, but she was just one of those dogs who really touches your heart. My last GSD was also one of those dogs, bless him!
Zak touched me cos it seemed everyone had given up on him, I'm his 7th home for goodness sake! This is his forever home tho, he deserves some loyalty and love!
big salami said:I've always found that rescue dogs always seem to turn out to be even more loving and loyal than others (and that's saying something!) it's as if they realise that they've been saved from an horrible fate and are forever grateful for it!
Both my current boys were rescued (though Blaze was a private rescue) and Hector was such a comfort to me when my wife died I have to say that of all the dogs that have been in my life he's the most special to me (and that's saying a very BIG something!)
Have loved all my dogs though and despite having had more than the average person does, I'm always devastated to lose one of them.
This feller doesn't seem to mind who he loves!!

minxy69 said:My first Dane and first GSD were both puppies when i got them. Lovely, but there's something about a rescue dog. My second Dane, her owner died while on holiday abroad, and his wife couldn't cope, left her locked in a small yard all day and night. she was just over the back frm me then, and i used to hear her crying and barking...in the end I just went and asked if I could take her. She came into my home, had a good look around, went upstairs, and i found her laid flat out on the spare bed! Yup, this would do her, she was home! lol Gorgeous girl, she made a special friennd of a Suffolk tup, lol! He used to run down the field to greet her, baaing and carryng on...so funny!
