That's great I used to breed Great Danes - Never cropped their ears though, a barbaric practice which involves unneccessary pain to the poor animal!



Never bred any Harlequins though, very hard to get true colour!

Great Danes ears naturally fall down and to get them to stand up like that a template is put behind them and the excess skin is cut away (often with scissors) and then they are taped up with "lolly sticks" and left like that for a long while until they stay that way!! I think that's barbaric myself and it's definitely worse than tail docking (which I don't approve of either!)

It has been outlawed in the UK but, still practiced in the US and Europe although lots of more concerned breeders in the US and Europe aren't doing it now! It is now legal (within the US kennel club rules) to show uncropped Danes but, they don't do well in the show ring as the judges are mostly "old school" and like to see mutilated ears!!

On the subject of tail docking, it used to be the regular practice for breeders to bite the tails off puppies when they were just hours old then, they would dip the stump into iron filings to stop them bleeding!!! That is illegal now and should only be done by a vet but, it's thought that some of the more unscrupulous breeders still bite so as to save on vets fees!!

Yeah, ain't it just!! All sorts of horrible people willing to ignore the welfare of the poor dogs to make a fast buck! If donme correctly there usually isn't too much in the way of financial reward for the responsible dog breeder what with vet fees and feeding the right foods and supplements to both the puppies and to the dam too!

The point fore responsible breeders is that they want a puppy for themselves a lot of the time and also want to sell pups to people who will show them!

Of course if their pups grow to be good show specimens their reputation will rise and they can charge more and make it more worthwhile. The ones that are universaly hated is the "back street" breedser who will do it on the cheap and sell the puppies for as much as they can get and to anyone with the money to buy them!
Responsible breeders will always check out prospective owners and I used to turn down around half the people who wanted to buy my pups as they just weren't suitable or hadn't got a good enough place for the pups!

That;s NOT snobbishness just wanting the pups to be loved and kept in a good environment.
