I have this reaccuring problem, someone takes it upon themselves to wait until My scores get high and then gives it a one. I know I am not alone, as this person targets other writer's who climb their way to the top.

Isn't there something that can be done about this? It's always the same person and they even send back anonymous feedback and say mean things and then adds.... got you again.

There has to be a way to stop this, I just don't know how. It very frustrating to put work and effort out only to have a score destroyed by the likes of this coward.

I don't write for the scores, I write because I love to write. Plain and simple, and I have even acquired a small group of faithfull readers. I just find this mean spirited and a way to be hurtful.

I just wanted to know what you, My peers, think about this.

Thanks,
MV

There isn't a damn thing you can do about nasty people enjoying their nastiness. Anonymous stuff on the Net is their perfect forum.

I put my work out in the big mean world for the constructive feedback I can do something with; the crud feedback is simply a hazard of the road, and means no more than that pile of dogshit you ran over on the way to work. Recognize it for what it is and it will be easier to scrape off.

This is the second time I've made this suggestion tonite...ignore the scores. While they're good (and congrats on that) they are subject to responses that have absolutelly nothing to do with your writing skills.

But, then again, I submit mostly poetry, and scores for that are a joke :D

Hangin's too good for the varmint...

When you find out who it is I say we all go over to his house and beat the bejesus out of him.

BTW, this has never happened to me. Does someone have a personal grudge against you?

Madame Manga, HomerPindar , and Rusher;
Thanks for the replies, I know I am not a lone victim here I have talked to a few other writer's in private about the matter. But as for beating the bejesus out of him/her I am all for it.

Secondly, I do tend to ignore the scoring and such but it's hard sometimes because I find Myself sneaking in to see how they are doing from day to day.

Last but not least, yes, I think I will ignore the feedbacks from whomever this person is. I did get a cute negative feedback though from some super religeous fanatic. It said I was going to burn in hell for writing these stories.

My thought on that is well if I am going to burn for writing your coming with Me for reading. HEHE. thanks for letting Me vent and tossing out your feelings on the matter.

Sad but true

There have been countless threads on this topic alone but yes, it does happen. Once your story hits that top list it becomes no longer just a tale for the readers consideration, but a target for low scores. Whether these votes are from trouble making readers or spiteful writers (I sincerely hope it is not the latter but remain skeptical myself), it is a fact that seems only those with a large enough fan base (i.e. ChicagoBob) are immune to.

For example, my latest story, which received the coveted “E” from the editors, had a perfect “5” rating with close to 25 votes by the time the Top List was updated to include it. Needless to say, it did not remain on the Top List for long.

So, what about my story changed between those two periods of time?

I try not to ask myself that question anymore.

amazed

I happened upon your story today before you posted M.A. due to the fact that I was perusing the top list and gave it a read. I enjoyed it and voted it along with the other's feeling it deserved a five. I didn't give feedback I hoped the score was enough.

I don't have much to say except I think it's either terrorist activity attacking lit. LOL. Or, it is a spiteful writer that just can't climb the ranks.

I know I still need some work to improve My writing style and such but I am doing something I love, (now if I could only get paid for it), and will continue to do. I have My own slow growing fanbase and would hope that sooner or later it is huge. But until the day comes that a flurry of one votes wouldn't do damage I happily keep banging out stories and participating in fueling fantasies.

MV,

Just to backup with some stats; I checked a story of mine that was posted here since yesterday. At hte point of writing this, it was read 1898 times (or at least clicked on), and a mere 21 people voted it.
So this vote-score is constituted by less than 2% of the number of people at least wishing to see it appear on their screen. And I doubt if it will very much different with other stories. Top stories are read 26,000 times, with around 300 votes cast, about the same range of percentage.

That percentage is not even considering the reasons for voting. The span of reasons is so big that it leads me to see it as a cute gadget of minute importance for my well-being as a starting writer.

I think we should all view it like that: scores are overrated :)

Actually, feedback is the only "score" I count at all. Even a "I like it" means far more to me than any score, whether it be a story or poem. I've not received negitive feedback, but heck, consider that a compliment in its own right. It made someone feel SOMETHING worth responding to, and that certainly beat apathy in the arts...

Correct

Homer,

You are very right, he just struck again by the way. GRR. lol.
That is a very good way to look at it. Thanks you just made My day a bit brighter.

negative votes and feedback

:p I have had some great feedback on my stories. I do read the votes and hits on the story and do wish more people who read it would vote but I write for me.

Don't let this turkey bother you,I think he is probably a person who envies how good you are and takes it out on you and other exceptional writers by downgrading you where possible.

My kudo's to those who send feedback good or bad but especially good. When those dark days when your muse is absent arrive, its nice to find a note in your mail raving about a story.

M.V. you should have an e-mail full every day.

As to the poetry section I agree if you were depending on votes or readers you would be in trouble. I submitted one, and it scared me off.

Thank you maggie and yes I do get quite a bit of feedback, grins, I guess I just hate getting any negative. I appreciate your kind words and sentiments though.

I am working past it now that it happens daily. It is always one and always the same message or with a slight variation. So BLAH! to him/her whoever they are.

I actually get a lot of responses from the same people or I did. Now it seems the fan base is growing slightly, so I just send out individual thankyous to the new people and am working on adding everyone to one mailing list for as soon as stories post and also for thanking them for the time they take to read, vote and give feedback.

An ego is so hard to build up and yet fragile enough to break at times. Now that being said overall I have a very good feeling about every story I post, each is My baby and that is why I take the negative personally.

A lot of time and effort goes into each story, well I type roughly around 65wpm so maybe not that long. LOL. I just am full of ideas and until I run out the evil one point giving wonder can attack away.

Kinda got off on a rant there didn't I :D

Unjust negative feedback

One thing I have noted through my life is that there are many talented people in the world who can create - beautiful stories, poetry, works of art...etc. Then there are (hopefully only a few) ugly minded people who cannot create because their souls are mean and their eyes are blinded by malice, so they set out to destroy instead. What miserable lives they must lead?

I concur with others on this thread....
As frustrating as this annonymous ignoramus is, believe in your own skill and accept the well deserved praises of your genuine readers.

I know I do.....

Like I've said before, there are just some people who feel that the only way they can elevate themselves (so they think) is by stepping on others.

It ends up telling a lot more about them than it does you.

The fact that they seem to think that it's about the score rather than the act of writing itself reveals the level of their cluelessness.

It also indicates possible issues with insecurity as well, which is why they choose anonymity.
