I have done. I wrote "King's Bay" in first person and the narrator was a guy. It seemed to go over well. I also wrote "Lessons Learned" in first person and although the narrator was a woman, she was gay and I am not. So it's certainly possible to write as a person who is very different from you.
Usually I write in third person, as first is neither my favorite to read or write, but in those instances, that worked best for the story. And I'd do it again.
Some of the advice was to remember that men and women do think differently, do approach things differently, so don't make your character a man with a woman's name and body, and vice versa.
Excellent advice, but easier said than done. After all, no one really knows for sure exactly how the other sex's perspective differs from one's own. Ultimately it's got to be an educated guess.
Something like that, and there are people of both genders that embody characteristics usually attributed to the other, certainly. There are alpha women and beta men, so to speak. But I think it's true that *in general* women and men think differently and approach situations differently and it's something to keep in mind when writing.
