Think about it...

Happy Birthday...
Happy New Years...
Happy Easter...
Happy Anniversary...
Happy Halloween...
Happy Thanksgiving...
Happy Valentines Day...
Happy Fathers Day...
Happy Mothers Day...
Happy 4th of July...
Happy Holidays...

and then...

Merry Christmas...

Does anyone know how the phrase "Merry Christmas" started and why its about the only day of celebration that doesn't come with "happy" before it...

Its weird tho, cuz "merry" doesn't fit with any of the other phrases and "happy" doesn't sound right preceeding Christmas...

My guess is because it fits X-mas better than "happy' does. I asked the very same question all my life, and this is my conclusion.

It's a good question, because it sound somewhat archaic. And so we must have gotten it from the British, right (where we got many of our other mainstream Christmas traditions from--the tree, cards, etc.). But the British say "Happy Christmas." And yeah, it does sound weird.

Not weird at all. It doesn't sound right because it's not what everyone has said to you for your entire life. You're used to "Merry Christmas," so "Happy Christmas" doesn't sound right.

here's what one loser on the net had to say:

Q: Why do we wish people a "Merry Christmas" instead of a "Happy Christmas"?

A: The two are about the same, but with "Merry Christmas" an extra twinkle is seen in the eyes.

yeah, i know..it's not really an answer. That's all the info jeeves would give me *shrug*

That's actually a good answer.
