Does anyone know how conjugal visits work?

I don't know very much about prisons but I have heard about conjugal visits in which an inmate can have a visit in which sexual activity is allowed. Does anyone know much about this, and how something like that would work?

The pair get locked in a room with a couch and a bed and a bathroom. Kinda like a hotel room, only smaller. The time they can spend together differs from state to state. I do think that they need to be married, not sure on that though.

Of course the woman will have to submit to a full cavity search, to insure she isn't smuggling in drugs or weapons. And if it's the husband visiting he too will have to submit to a cavity search.

Thank you for that answer. I suspected that there would be a marriage requirement and assumed that there would be a search considering the prison aspect. The concept was interesting because I've heard that this exists, and yet it is intriguing because of the obvious limitations and barriers that inmates must have when it comes to forming relationships an experiencing intimacy. It sounds as if many inmates who enter prison without being married may find those barriers to be difficult if not impossible to overcome leading them to possibly resort to the things that people have heard about though that could just be urban legend. More likely I suspect is that inmates released after a lengthy incarceration may find forming close personal relationships or the ability to experience intimacy to be much more difficult to impossible.

There are I think but four states which permit this. Try googling ‘New York State Department of Corrections’ and work your way through for details of who is eligible. It’s more than just husband and wife. I have no idea what the facilities are like.

You've just heard of this?

Well, there's a first time for everything.

I didn't know about them until I was well into my twenties, when mention was made of it in a newspaper.

I would think that for most people this would be something outside of their day to day thinking. They one video posted on Youtube about it suggests that there is even therapeutic value that can be associated with it. That would also be something worth learning about.

Maybe in some places but certainly not in the State of California. Overnight visits, known as "Family Visits" take place in Family Visiting Quarters which are more like small apartments, some having more than one bedroom, with a kitchen, bathroom, common areas and in some facilities a patio with barbecue.

They are often referred to as "The Boneyard" by inmates and staff.

They aren't just "conjugal" visits, implying a marital or sexual relationship, but can also be family visits in that wives, children, legal stepchildren, brothers, sisters, parents.....are allowed with restrictions. The purpose is, ostensibly, to preserve a family relationship through incarceration.

Inmates must appear at the door to the family visiting quarters for designated count times and depending on circumstances (custody level, controlling offense....) family members may be required to appear for a count as well.

The California Code of Regulations outlining family visiting can be found here.

Section 3177 - Family Visiting (Overnight)

Thanks for that information.
