I'm looking for FREE software to use for hosting a message board. I already have a server and a domain name registered. Now I'm looking for software to run a message board.

I'm looking for something basic. I'm just wanting to have a small, niche type of board, but have no experience at all with anything like this.

Any help or information would be highly appreciated.

proboards is pretty good... nobody i know has ever had any problems with them.

Do you have a web server (or a web hotel account) and you just want the software?

Then check out this place, you can try a few different boards, and other free web software:

I have run MyBB without any real prior know-how.

If you're a little tech savvy, PhpBB us probably the best free one out there.

Or do you want a free forum host?
I know some people who use Runboard, and seems happy with it. Can't remember, but they might put ads in there.

And proboards, like ent mentioned, is supposed to be good too:

Yes, I have my pwn server space. A friend of mine is an MCSE and he has his own servers. Along with networking, he does his own hosting. He has given me server space, and I have registered a domain name that's now run into his server. I'm not sure what you mean by a web hotel.

I run the "industry standard" and 100% free phpbb (http://www.phpbb.com/) which is pretty much identical to vBulletin (which Literotica runs on), and has all its features.

You need MySQL and of course PHP on your host server.

I set it up myself (I maintain my own website), but many ISP's can you help with it, or set it up for you.

Same thing that you got, but you buy it from a company. It usually comes with a database server (needed to run a forum, but if your buddy is not a half-wit tech, he can easily set one up for you, unless he has one running already).

As long as you have PHP support, you should be fine. PhpBB is a good choice. It runs MySQL, but also MS-SQL and Access. If your friend is MCSE he might run a Microsoft IIS server. If you can't run PHP (an Open Source web script language), I'm not sure what other apps are any good though.
