Whenever the right wing wants to whip their base they pull this NAACP/La Raza are racist organizations, Blacks and Latinos are welfare scam artists, Blacks and Latinos are criminals, etc. And then they wonder why no minorities want to join their party.

It could be explained by something relatively simple, too.

Let's consider the 2008 Democratic presidential primary. Take the Republican rhetoric out of it.

This site shows how Hillary and Barack did in each state, by various demographic splits.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/04/us/politics/04margins_graphic.html

Pretty even, for the most part. Hillary's support skew a bit older, Barack's a bit younger. Hillary, female; Barak, male. Hillary's support is stronger among those with less education. But always small deltas.

Except...pull up the race split. In almost every primary, Black voters essentially voted en masse for Obama.

I wonder why that is...what is it about Obama's policies that seemed so similar to most other voters, yet were so commandingly different for black voters?

Since of course black voters wouldn't just look at the color of a candidate's skin, would they? Whites didn't vote en masse for the candidate that looked like them...the split of the white vote is much more even.

Just something to think about.

Nice side topic. This doesn't answer Drixxx' question, though.

So if Blacks only vote for the candidate that looks like them how do you explain the crushing defeats of Alan Keyes and Al Sharpton?

Don't forget that they make suppressing gay rights an 11th hour issue before every election. If gays somewhere that love each other get rights then it changes YOUR marraige. So vote against gay rights!

We're all under ATTACK by DEMONS! THE ENEMY IS AT THE GATES! COME VOTE FOR US REBLUCANNNNS!!!

Gay demons
Mexican worker demons
Muslim American demons
Black demons

Black-Mexican Muslim gay uber-demons!

Drixxx's point, such that it is, is that rhetoric is a primary determining factor in party preference for voters. That's his supposition, and the evidence suggests that it's not well founded.

It is rare for any Republican candidate to garner even 20% of the black vote, regardless of what that candidate says. It's almost as though some voters have made up their minds before they hear what the candidate has to say.

I saw a T-shirt today that I'm going to get for the Vettebigot....

On the front, it reads: I like my Muslims like I like my coffee...
On the back, it reads: I don't like coffee

I thought it'd be pretty appropriate for our racist-in-residence.

So if Blacks only vote for the candidate that looks like them how do you explain the crushing defeats of Alan Keyes and Al Sharpton?

How do you explain the stunning victory of Alvin Greene?

Do you think it's his well thought out policies, or his leadership skills and charisma?

Electronic voting with no paper trail and proprietary software.

But if it's such a relatively simple thing as skin color, then all that's needed is a Black Republican. Why isn't Michael Steele, arguably the highest profile Republican, getting hordes of colored folk to see the light of the Republicans through the darkness of the Democrats?

(see what I did with the triple nuanced metaphors there?) :D

It's not what the Republican candidate says it's what he/she doesn't say. Namely denouncing the racist elements of the Republican Party. When is the last time you've seen a Republican call out another Republican for racism?

Greene is a huge name in SC. Lots of wealthy, influential SCarolinians have that name.

And his name was at the top of the ballot where voters had heard of neither candidate.

And Greene is a much better sounding name than "Vic Rawl" or whatever his name was. Vic Rawl sounds like a WWE wrestling reject.

they ALL did against Lott

even though he wasnt one:mad:

Hey man, they were all over that VA senator for calling Indian Americans "Macacas" (monkeys). And they're all over Newt Gingrich for saying that the fabric of America is under attack by Muslim Americans.

Right???
