Do Your Stories Take Too Long To Write?

I observe that LIT writers spend 40 forevers making their tales. Why, I wonder? FAWC shoulda been done and over days ago yet the end is 9 days down the road.

Procrastination does not just happen, my friend. You gotta work at it. I'll be glad to give you pointers if you need them.

Hell yes they do. I wish ideas could magically spill from my head into a word document, but it doesn't work that way. It takes time to write, type and tinker...even when I have uninterrupted time to do it. How one chooses to spend their time is another thing. I could have written some of my nude day story today, but opted to take a walk on this beautiful morning. I write for enjoyment, and I choose when I will spend the time to do that over something else.

I respectfully submit that having higher priorities in life than providing free content to some web site is a positive thing.

Heresy!

My family and community life take precedence, and are sometimes annoyingly demanding.

That's what I was going to say. These French projects aren't going to grade themselves. Of the 9 days left in FAWC 5, I need 5 of them for actual work.

Can we talk?

Write what you know. Now! Being a know it all may not guarantee talent for writing, but a fund of knowledge and experiences makes the work much easier. The other thing is this: When most people look into the future they imagine madmen with axes chasing little kids, or pushing granny off the top of the Sears Tower, but a few people imagine new bridges and other wonders, and theyre the folks we lock up.

I submit George Patton shot peasants' burrows when the animals held up his army. If French is important get it the fuck off the road.

It's called life Jimmy. Most people actually have one.

Youre one of those Old Fucks who drive 15 mph in the fast lane at quitting time. Happy Hour at the VFW is your life.

No Jimmy, I'm not you. I don't drink in the first place and I'm at work now. I work a 12 hour shift every day from the start of a well to the end. As for driving. I drive the speed limit on the road but I do still race dirt cars when I'm off work. Ever seen an IMCA Modified Jimmy? Probably not.

It's not like everyone is taking the full time to write for FAWC. Some got something out in the first couple of days. Some aren't even starting until late in the composing period. Racing with the clock wasn't really a requirement. It's nice to know that JBJ is fixated on FAWC, though.

Counting your 3 how many is that, 3?

No, there are nine in the bin now (which you could have found out yourself by reading the thread, which I know you do), and, no, three of them aren't mine. But since you mentioned it, I don't have a problem churning them out quickly. But I also don't have a problem with those who can't/don't. You're only problem is in continually making up new hooks to hang your "give me attention" on.

The main reason mine take forever:

1. When I feel like writing, I am busy and am unable to sit down and write

2. When I do have time to write, I may not be in the mood to write for whatever reason

3. When I have time and am in the mood, I may be working on one story, then get sidetracked and start or work on another

4. I may feel the need to make a small change in the story and as a result have to re-write the whole thing from scratch

5. While I'm writing one and making progress, I'll suddenly get bored with it and switch to another story then repeat

6. My computer, disc, or files are lost or damaged and I lose my story files that I meant to back up but never got around to doing since my computer is working fine

7. When I finish, I'm not satisfied with it and put it aside with the thought of returning to it in the future to fix it

And YOU write for the Ages. Maybe what we need is a FAWC-PILOT contest.

Some of mine have been 'pending' completion for 15+ years. :D

I thought my average of a 6 year delay was bad.

My "record" is probably 14 years, i.e. a fantasy I first had back in the year 2000, and I've yet to write it out as a proper story.

It's just that exploring the character's back stories becomes too much fun.

I write ultra-boring vanilla erotica, but it's fun because many of my fantasies are based on real women I've known...

And when I write, I keep thinking, e.g. "why not add a scene to explain why this guy respects her?", "why not add a scene where she became silently jealous that he was dancing with another woman?", etc. even if the scenes has nothing to do with sex, or even the flow of the "plot". I just want my characters to be "real" and "believable".

But as it happens, I'm not a professional writer, do not have the time to sit down and write the stories the way I would want to.
