That is a good way to look at it. May have to start high-5ing myself.Plus, it balances out some troll votes.
When I submitted my first stories, they got so few votes I didn't think that any of them would get more than five, so I gave myself a pity vote.

So if you don't think your story is worthy of a 5, do you give it less stars?
Would that be the equivalent of a pity fuck? LMAO.
Nope. Rather gauche.
In terms of hitting one of those little stars... no, haven't done that since my earliest chapters were submitted. But I'm guilty of giving myself 100% here and there because I've wanted to respond publicly to a comment someone's left me. Unfortunately, sometimes that's the only way you can communicate with readers, particularly where people have left anonymous comments.
It's true I could give myself 50% when I do this - but why should I?Why would I want to hit my own score? Besides, like others here, I suspect that all votes from my ISP address get swept away eventually.
I do wish there was a way I could leave a comment without having to vote though. Not everyone goes to take a look at the waffle I've written on the bio page. It'd be nice to have another way to communicate...
An SO on the same IP might get swept because there have been two votes from the same IP address. But if you vote for yourself (only once), it will not be swept as they don't know the IP address that voted is the IP of the author. They don't track IPs when a story is submitted. That's been my impression; I vote on my stories; they don't get swept. My impression is that they'd just get swept away--along with that of a significant other on the same ISP (which is a little shitty, I think).
