Twitter is much more than that. I'll explain it the way I did to my Language Play class yesterday, where we were talking about texting - naturally Twitter came up.

Twitter is a way to communicate with other people. You can share your life with people who follow you, and you can interact with people as well. Often people have conversations over Twitter, using it almost like an IM service. People use it to publicize projects they're working on, where they are, and yes - what they had for breakfast. Celebrities are using Twitter a LOT lately and it's fun to follow them and see what they're doing; many write the tweets themselves, but some of them hire writers. Businesses are also using Twitter a lot to communicate directly with customers; rather than using a "contact us" page, customers can send feedback straight to the company and know it will be looked at quickly. But Twitter is first and foremost about communication...with friends, with strangers around the world, with fans, with customers...it's about interaction.
