I think one would temper the other - it's hard to be optimistic when reality constantly rears its ugly head. I can optimistically go about my day believing that I might win the lottery but reality, so far, has proven that not likely.

winning the lottery could happen..............realistically............though............you gotta realize that the chances of you winning it is slim.
I know what you mean.............about it's hard to think positively.......when things around you are not......but there is a bright light somewhere in every situation...........it's up to you to look for it.

Washington used the phrase 'borrowing trouble' or something close to it. I can't actually run my day being optimistic, but I can do my best not to worry about the bad stuff that might happen. That's not exactly optimistic, I know. I guess I strive for neutrality.
