Do You Play?

I'm talking about musical instruments you perverts! I know a couple of the old-timers like Xander play... but there are sooo many new faces around. Since I've been absent for an entire year I'd like to get to know some of you folks. So, tell me, do you play? What do you play? Are you professional or novice? I'll go first.

Yes, I play
I play guitar (mostly acoustic but only because I prefer it to electric). I can also play piano (half-heartedly...it's too discipline oriented for my scatter-brain), and I can play the stringed dulcimer.
My favorite is my Fender stratacoustic, his name is Freddy (Freddy Fender, get it?) Freddy is extremely unhappy unless I tickle his belly at least a couple of hours a day.

I certainly do not think of myself as professional, it's more of a hobby for me... now writing songs/music, that's where my real talent lies.

Talk to me...

I play the clarinet and a couple different saxophones, though it's been a couple years since I"ve played anything but the Bari Sax. I can play valved instruments, too, but I'm really really rusty.

I also hack around on the bass guitar. I'm going to be learning piano this coming fall.

I sing better than all of those, though.

My husband plays the drums from time to time and he actually tried to teach teach me until I got mad and threw the sticks in his direction... accidentally on purpose, of course. :D

I played the violen for about five years.. I just recently gave it up, to save my fingertips from calices.

You mean we're not too old to learn something new?

Now that's refreshing!

I've played a lot of instruments in my life, but the only one that served me well was my voice.

Ukulele:2 years (elementary school)
Recorder: 1 year (elementary school)
Guitar: 1 year
Drums: 4 months - I have rhythm but not THAT much.
Piano: 2 years
Clarinet: 3 years
Flute: 1 year

I sang until I was about 15 years old. I had a great voice, and was headed towards some kind of Opera music class, because my voice was rich and flexible. It was beautiful.

And then I got bullimic. And the bile burnt through my throat and harmed my vocal chords... so I don't sing anymore.

Jim!

You play the baritone sax? OMG.. that is the sexiest instrument ever invented. I love the baritone sax. Unfortunately, I cannot play ANY valved/wind instruments. I know, imagine that, you'd think with as much hot air as I have I could do it. Good luck with your piano endeavors, it really is extremely disciplined which was my major malfunction with it.

Pick those instruments back up baby! I'm sure you remember the pure joy and sense of accomplishment when you learn to play something new. I soooo wanna play the bari :(

I play the piano. Few songs, nothing elaborate.

I'm trying to get my daughter to learn but she's not interested.

Used to play the recorder in school and drums.

:) Never too old. And it's invigorating to find yourself picking up new skills when you thought that perhaps you couldn't.

Nothing like a little fire to keep your relationship sharp, that's what I always say LOL

I've played the Bari for a couple of decades (with a bit of a break in there, too). Mostly now I'm concentrating on vocal stuff, but I'll be back to the Bari soon enough, I know. I can't stay away from it.

UNfortunately, I'm not a terribly disciplined musician myself. I'm a jazz kind of guy and my concentration and attention to detail isn't all that hot, so I figure I'll have fun with it and learn what I can. :(

Cool, cool! I sing classical and erm, non classical;blues, funk, folk, whatever.
i've been studying voice since middle school and majored in music before i dropped out of college.

I cheated for years playing and singing by ear and when i got to college-- theory and reading music kicked my ass. I can play enough guitar and piano to back myself up singing. I am studying harp(strings not harmonica) too though and i love it.

oh! and nice to meet ya btw..!:)

Aly, Hi, always love to meet someone with my name, rather cool.

The reading music and theory are always what kick my ass as well... I mostly play by ear, that's the fun part. I CAN read it if I have to but I would much rather sit down with Freddy and just play what I hear.

Vixen, that's an extremely sad story. If I lost my voice I would be so depressed. Singing makes me happy. My two best friends and myself sing and play constantly, we have beautiful harmony. It's just one of those things, no matter what your mood is if you start singing you're gonna be happy.

it did make me depressed. And I'm still sad about it when I see the choir in church. I used to be part of that choir. And I used to sing to my bf's... and I can't bear to do it. I sound terrible.

Sax - all types: 10 years
Bassoon: 10 years
I can play a bit of flute/clarinet/trombone, but nothing very well.

I sing low alto/high tenor.

aly (heh)
I can relate. I can read too, it just takes me so long though. I can hear a song and plunk it out in about 20 minutes, the skeleton of it that is. If i get a new piece with just the sheet music, that will take hours and I'm too impatient!

I'm sorry to hear that too.:(
is there no way to rehabilitate it?I know some people with nodes who have actually been able to get back to singing after therapy. Does it hurt? If not, i hope ya still do for fun..xo

I played the flute for 5 years...willingly gave it up...wanted to play the sax but never had the opporunity.

Played the piano for three years but that was ages ago...I can still play a couple of songs but never will (Oh Gram forgive me but I can't play what I don't support).

My brother tried to teach me how to play the guitar and the bass...but I decided I'd much rather watch the experts and participate in the appreciation aspect only.

So I am into music appreciation rather than participating as far as playing any instruments.

I do sing...but that is my secret.

it's not nodes, it's deterioration of the vocal cords.... chords?... anyway... I've done some therapy for it, so that I could speak okay, and so that my speaking voice wasn't gravelly, but I just.. after that, my singing voice got better for a while and then began to deteriorate. Now it just sucks.

ALYRAHH! OMG!

*clutches heart and stumbles around stiffly before colapsing in a heap*

(i play the alto sax, at least, i used to. now all that i play is my cds)
