My take:
I'm from Europe, and Europe's racism towards Romas is similar to Americans' racism towards African descendants.
it's a very murky issue
The only difference is that Romas migrated to Europe on their free wll, Africans - not. But both ethnicities were enslaved and suffered awful abuse and in ww2 Europe, genocide. And good people within their midst are still experiencing daily racism.
However. Crime is nowadays far far far more prevalent among African and Roma minorities, than among White, South African or Asian residents.

Not a "black brit." I just found your assessment that racism across seas is "far lesser" than what occurs in America to be very...um...interesting.

See, it sounds eerily similar to Northern Americans thinking racism is somehow either milder or altogether nonexistent in those states. There's been a very inaccurate depiction in America for centuries that racism is only clustered in the Southern states. So, while I'm not 100% qualified to speak on racism outside of my country of residence, I can guarantee that comparing the intensity of racism across countries is short slighted, at best. It's like those people who've witnessed a loved one die and they somehow think they can tell others how to grieve. "Well, I'm sure you're going through a tough time, but at least it's just Alzheimer's Disease and not cancer." No one benefits from that type of rhetoric and ignorant assumptions. You ultimately just end up offending others (at the least) & downplaying their trauma.

So, I'm sure that racism in any country is nothing short of oppressive.

And personally, such statements that UK black people have it better off vs African Americans reveal the inherent privilege of the one who asserts such things.
