… living in large numbers in your neighborhood?

Some people think a neighborhood comes down with Mexicans the same way it might be inflicted with flies or grasshoppers. Just to be clear, we are not talking about La Chicanada. No, I mean real, honest-to-God, born-in Mexico MEXICANS. These are two substantially different cultures and blending them in this discussion is beyond the point.

Anyway, if you DO have Mexicans in large numbers, and you still are shopping at Safeway-Vons-The Pavilion, Kroger (Ralphs, Smiths, Fry’s, Fred Meyer, etc.), Albertsons, and so on, for mean, fruit, and vegetables, you need to hunt for a Mexican Supermarket. Admittedly, painting with a broad brush here, one notices that in most Latino families, the girls do the shopping and the boys do the eating. Like their Norteamericano counterparts, The Men are responsible for all things BBQ. That is universal, so it seems. That said, you can sell good looking but crappy produce to Gringos, but not so much to many Latino grocery shoppers. They tend to take their time and carefully inspect and evaluate each and every item they select before placing in their carts. Additionally, they expect staple food items to be perpetually “on sale” without the necessity of a loyalty card membership.

If you do not have enough Mexicans to support a dedicated supermarket, like Vallarta Supermarket*, either you have to import more Mexicans or you have to move. Simple as that.

As you were.

Yes, I have large numbers of Mexicans and other central Americans in my neighborhood. I go to their store for Hoja Santa, Yerba Buena, and other shit that no one else sells, but for most products, this is such an international area that they have everyone's stuff at the generic supermarkets.

i miss fiesta foods.

are you huffing glue?

I agreee our Hispanic supermarkets have the best produce! So much better than Raleys, Bel - air etc and their prices are fantastic too! Don't forget about their meat departments - Great deals and great quality....Mangos.....I would go there for Mango's alone!

I live in California in the heart of the AG country....so we about 7 stores in town.

That might be true where I live with respect to non-perishable items (Herdez, La Victoria, seasonings, tortillas, etc. But when it comes to the meat -- chicken especially -- there can be no comparison between fresh chicken(s) purchased at a Safeway chain and the same purchased at a dedicated Latino market. The chicken at Vallarta Supermarket tastes like CHICKEN, not like watery mushy ultra-white, nearly fat-free nothingness.

I could actually get live chickens 4 blocks from here, if I wanted to have a Santeria ceremony.

I have noticed one thing, however: When you are in Texas, the smaller chains (H-E-B, for example), have a lot of Mexican style fruit and vegetables, but the meat is still inflicted with that Foster Farms / Mega-Processing-Plant boredom for the most part.

I would like a taqueria in my neighborhood, but there aren't enough Mexicans in the area to support one.

Just my luck to have been left out of the benefits of illegal immigration.

I gave up glue after I tried to inject it into my eyeballs and had a bad reaction.

i dissected a pig with latex arteries and veins.

one was blue.

one was red.

i forget which was which.

sort of like the electoral maps.

do you have glue-filled blood-passage-thoroughways in your eyes?

When you don't see any more block lettered graffiti, drive another couple of hundred miles and set up camp. Try and move in close to the local elected representatives, there will be plenty of law enforcement available.

Block lettered graffiti is not Mexican. It's more a Chicano deal. If Mexicans paint on walls, their work leans more toward murals than "FLACA" and "M-13".

Where I live, there are many many Latino supermarkets. Also, most of the Mexican people living in this part of the San Fernando Valley (of L.A.) are here legally.

They blend in and become Chicanos fairly quick.

Not really.

While in Mexico, I attended a student meeting wherein there were a bunch of freshman Chicanos who were relieved of their "birthright home-at-last" self-image as being "Mexican," by the real Mexicans telling them that, culturally, they are just "brown Gringos."

There is a difference. Every Mexican I have ever known understands this. Fewer Chicanos do, so it seems.

Anyway, Latino supermarkets are a Godsend.

Mexico is North American.

Norteamericano refers to what you might call "Americans." It does not mean everyone from the Isthmus of Panama and north. It is the proper term to describe people from the U.S.A. Canadians/Canadiens are called "Canadians" and people from Mexico are called "Mexicans." People from the U.S.A. are called "Norteamericanos." You stand corrected.
