Do you have any friends with polar opposite political views?

Of course— lots of them.

For the most part, I don't discuss politics with friends. If the topic does arise, it's because friends state their opinions and facts. I state my opinions and facts. Then, like polite people, we drop the subject.

You are never (or, at the very least, rarely) going to change people's political and economic views. It's a waste of time and serves no purpose.

Bringing up politics is, on the whole, rude.

This, right here, is why discussing politics is pointless.

No matter which side you're on, if someone is adamantly on the opposite, they aren't going to change.

we agree to disagree. The fact that our politics views are different doesn't mean we should go at each other's throats for that. It's like arguing the food - someone loves boiled carrots, someone hates them, but does it mean we need to fight because of it? Nah.
If the argument breaks out and gets too heated up, we can just drop the subject.
Politics, religion, ethics - these are topics that are just useless to argue about.:cattail:

We mostly discuss some certain things politely. Like some upcoming reform or some certain statement that someone made. We don't really often go figuring out "who's the better candidate for president" or things like that. We can share opinions but will not argue too much, at most expressing the disagreements.

I've been avoiding people for weeks.

Not looking forward to Thanksgiving.

The family is torn down the middle.

Tell me about it. I live in Trump Country. Like... Trump received 95% of the votes in the county. Just wait till they realize they get to keep their guns but lose their food stamps.

Governments change like the tide, so politics is at its most interesting when:

1. A scandal erupts, the bigger the better
2. Something out of scope happens that shakes enough people's expectations
3. You notice a pattern signalling an election call ( in canada, we dont have set election dates, so predicting when is a sport of its own)

Most day to day politics is about rewarding the party faithful, so most of the time politics is a snoozefest.

I love discussing the main 3 with most anyone, though most people dont really know shit about the game.

So, i talk politics mostly with my daughter, my youngest brother and a handful of buddies from law school, all of whom have different views on the issues of the day.

I decided to loan you that because I have an odd number of parenthesis...

Gosh, other than work or their jobs, my family and friends tend to talk about things that are far more mundane and don't care much about politics.
So for me, the GB is it in terms of any political or more intellectual -sortof- discussions.

Thanks to politics, the Queen is not talking to me since I voted for a BIG Johnson instead of trump.

I really like politics now! Talk about your peace and quiet! :D :D :D

It's always best not to have any friends.

Stick with what yer good at.

My ex is a right-wing, gun safe havin', SoCal Hillbilly. We had discussions that made me SMDH but she surprised the shit outta me by writing in Bernie.

Yay for diversity.

Yes, and we disagree without calling one another fascists, racists, misogynists, homophobic, ignorant, and stupid.

As far as I know most of my friends voted for Trump or Johnson. We talk some politics but frankly there are far more interesting topics for discussion. Books, movies, food, design, wine, sports, architecture.

People want to talk politics with me. I would not say that any of my friends or family and I polar opposites. I would say the majority of Republicans that I know would say they are socially liberal and economically conservative. I can have real discussions with the ones that aren't without it dissolving into name calling. I think the less
tolerant folks long ago self deported themselves out of my life. :D

Sure, I have both the anti-big government unless sex, drugs, rock n' roll then MAXIMUM FEDERAL SUPREMACY!!! (R)ight winger friends and some super tolerant, diversity loving "I hate white people because they are the scourge of humanity." liberal friends.

If so, how do you deal with them?

Just not talk politics?

Depends on what you mean by "polar opposite."

Yeah, this. I work right next to a conservative Republican. We work in media and craft information, so we're not divested from what's going on in the world politically.

We're not necessarily polar opposites per sé, but it's more like, you got your universe and I got mine. When it comes to politics, if I want peace in the workplace and harmony amongst our group, I'ma let you yap about whatever until you're done and then later on we can knock back drinks and talk about craft or music or who annoys us in our office and the other general shit we connect on.

You learn social tactics for self-preservation and mental well-being quickly. Apply them as necessary, with friends, family, colleagues, whomever.

You americans are more of the idealists types (and I mean it in a good way) the way you get so worked up about politics and so on, despite the fact that it can all turn nasty on both sides.

Other people are more concrete and interested just in how's the weather like, what's for dinner or how can I get the nicest curtains or DYI gear.
