My ex in Atlanta is dead set against having a gun. She has a huge dog so I guess that's something. I wish she would get one.

I have three but not for protection so much. Maybe I should keep one loaded and under the bed. I don't have kids and wouldn't do that if I was dating someone who had kids over.

Handing someone a gun is not the same as arming them.

If your girlfriend doesn't like guns, hasn't had any training, and, worse, is afraid of them. Encouraging her to get a gun is... hmm, irresponsible.

Granted, I think everyone should own at least one firearm and know how to use it. Particularly a woman living in Atlanta! However, obviously, that's unrealistic.

What are her specific objections to gun ownership? If you'd like to discuss it with her, rationally, I can possibly give you some ammunition (pun intended) for your argument.

I hold a firearms license and carry a gun daily (no, I'm not a cop). One of my favorite lines is: I fully support your right to be a victim, I simply refuse to allow you to make me one.

Well she is no longer my girlfriend. Though we do keep in touch some. That has been fading lately.

Ah, I passed over the "ex" part. Regardless, you still seem to care for her protection.

Um, if I may be so bold, since unsolicited advice is rarely welcome, you may want to re-think the gun under the bed scenario. It's bad tactics.

It would be a waste of your time to try to change her mind. She is a card carrying liberal.

Yeah I plan to get a gun case one day. Keep them locked up.

Excuse me! Just because someone's a liberal doesn't necessarily mean they won't own a gun. I know lot's of liberals that own gun and kill cute fuzzy things that taste good.

Hell, if my brother would let me, I'd have a gun. As it stands though, all I'm evidently allowed to have is the NRA handbook and a baseball bat.

Some might. I'd be surprised to see the more vocal liberal women here say they have a gun.

Sure do. Looking at getting a new .22 semi-auto actually, going to get some trigger time behind the new offerings from Colt, Sig , Ruger and Smith & Wesson over the holidays and see which I like best.

I couldn't have any guns in my place last year as it was university accommodation and the police here require you to fix a gun cabinet to the walls/floor which the university wouldn't let me do. But I'm with a private landlord this year so it's fine.

I thought it was hard to get guns in the UK?

Are you sure you aren't substituting "liberal" for "Democrat"? Isn't the liberal definition of having "personal protection" being able to afford an armed bodyguard?? ;)

Why won't your brother allow you to have a firearm?

DT, the Sig Mosquito is, as all Sig arms are, a nice piece. Ruger's 22/45 of course is the standard to which all manufacturers strive. At least in .22 cal pistols.

For the price, I'd definately look at the Ruger.

Because I was still single digit age when he went into the military. By the time he got out and had dealt with enough of the military trauma to get his head back in the game I was 16. He frequently forgets that I'm not 12 anymore. His wife, who is a year older than me (*cough*andliberal*cough*), owns a couple rifles and a ladies .22 and a Glock. She also has a concealed weapons permit and regularly carries.

Hell, at least I know he cares.

*snerk*
You should have seen him pop his cork when he found out I was taking birth control though. It was evidently proof positive that I was having sex... I was 25 at the time.:D

Yes. Two. Husband felt strongly about it and has a concealed carry licence. If it was around, I didn't want it used against me, so he modified them as necessary so I can use them and we take 'em to the firing range and shoot at zombie targets every few months.

I don't really dig it as a fun thing, but I am competent and that's what matters. I'm confident with them and I'm not at risk of having them used against me or blowing up my hands.

Compared to some other countries, definitely. But in the scheme of things it's not hard. I'd say getting a drivers license is harder when you think about it.

Looking at rifles not pistols, the Sig option being the SIG 522 and the Ruger being the Ruger SR22. UK = essentially no legal pistols.

What for? A firearm is just useful to soothe a sheepish soul.

If owning a gun would avert a crime, the States wouldn't have the highest crime rates in the civilized world, right? But the reality is that the countries were personal firearms are banned have much lesser homicide cases per 100k citizens.

Oh that's not true at all. Lots of crimes are prevented by presenting a strong opposition. I've been witness to several and heard of many more second hand.

I primarily would use it as a negotiation tool, but I will also shoot for center body mass should that fail. And it's better that they die than that I die.

It's harder than in the US. You have to go through police checks and they have to come look at where you're going to store the weapons.

We've got a couple of shotguns and a couple of air rifles. They're all my brothers.

That particular BS has been debunked so many times it's not worth fighting about. Check Australia's stats. As for the US, Washington has, until recently, had the strictest gun laws in the country. It also has the highest crime rate in the country.

Generally, people who use the pistol as replacement for pecker argument, have not had the dubious pleasure of praying that the punk who is robbing/raping/jacking your car won't decide to kill you when he's gotten what he wants.

Read me!

Guns are a tool, just like a hammer or a pencil or any number of things. They are not inherently evil, though the purpose of the person using it could be.

Taking away all the guns, if it were even possible, would not stop crime - especially because we would only be able to remove the guns owned by people legally. Personally, the idea of only criminals and military/paramilitary organizations having access to firearms is a scary thought.

I'd much rather live in a town where every Joe-Blow was required to carry - which would require them to also know how to handle a fire arm.
