Do you get horny while writing?

I've always taken this as figurative, not literal.

Just to clarify. I’ve also thought a writer who gives the impression they are masturbating as they write as being figurative simply because I don’t think the keyboard hand would be steady enough to type.

“I’ve never understood when someone says they masturbate with one hand whilst tapping the keyboard with the other.”

That’s why I used the word “says.”

Bo. I get excited if the story is going well, but not aroused.

The act of creation is enough.

Skipping eating while writing is common for me. Sometimes I forget to drink water or can't sleep until a scene is done either. I've nodded off on my keyboard and had my husband try to take it away only for me to wake up grab it back and resume typing. I can get a little obsessive while writing, especially when starting a new story, not as bad during editing.

Yes, that was me. The scenes were in my head and just HAD to put to words.

I think it depends on what you mean by "writing."

For me, the story is composed largely when I'm in my bed, with one hand on my crotch and the other on my left nipple. That's when I envision what all the characters are doing, and why.

When I get to the keyboard, all that remains is getting that scenario down and adding connective tissue such as names, locations, and a bit of the past history of the characters. At the same time, I'm trying to preserve as much as possible of the original story that I can find myself in the same head space that I had when I was conceiving it.

If I felt that I've done that successfully, I know I've got something that a reader might like. But I wouldn't say that the stuff I'm doing at the keyboard is erotic. But it evokes eroticism, if you get my drift.

So far my stories have been fantasies about people I know. Sometimes the characters are composites. When I am thinking up the story I am usually horny, but when I get down to writing the only thing that happens is I leak a lot of pre-cum.

Now editing my story – that’s entire different reaction. That's where quality control comes in.

Sure, if I'm writing erotica I can get turned on, especially if I'm working out and writing a sex scene. That said, I don't get so horny where it distracts me to the point where i have to stop writing and immediately start masturbating! I figure if I get horny from what I'm writing, then others may do the same when they read it. Like others said, it's quality control.

I must be unusual, because I always get horny when I write porn. Not, “omg I’m going to cum soon” horny, but kind of a low-grade erotic buzz. I touch myself too. Not continually, but when I pause to think about a passage I might brush my fingers across my nipples or between my legs.

I particularly do it when I’m editing. I’ll play around with sentence structure and word choice, trying to figure out what delivers the biggest erotic punch. I know I’ve got it right when it turns ME on … .

I suppose if one expands the definition of "horny" sufficiently I could say I get horny when I write erotica. It can be arousing, and thrilling, and I get erotic pleasure from it. But it's not stroke stuff for me. It's a different sort of pleasure.

Given your range of story content recently, one could be a little disturbed by that; so I shall interpret "different" very loosely indeed ;).

Carry on!

The range is part of what's erotically interesting to me. As a writer I enjoy trying to put myself in the place of someone whose erotic interests are different from mine, and to try to make the result at least somewhat plausible, or at least appealing. Hence, hucows, penis fish, horny moms, and tentacle monsters. I'm working on a gay male story, because it's an erotic perspective that is not mine but would be very interesting to explore in writing. But I also go back repeatedly to what I suppose is my erotic comfort zone, which typically means stories featuring, mature women with high sex drives and exhibitionist tendencies.

I've gotten excited over sexual scenarios I'm planning as well; obviously a writer of erotica wants to write what they find erotic.

But during the writing process, I'm less focused on my own sexual arousal and more focused on simply getting the proper words on the "page "

Not, “omg I’m going to cum soon” horny, but kind of a low-grade erotic buzz...

When you put it this way, I have to agree that I do usually get "horny" when I write the sex scenes.

I'll often get emotional in other ways when writing other kinds of character interactions. Not always. A lot of the drama, such as it is, is strategically constructed by intent. A "she needs to be angry with him here, so that that later she ____," sort of thing. I don't necessarily feel indignation on the character's behalf.

This would be the effect on me. It's more a pleasant mood than a "stop and take care of it" approach during the writing.

I get pleasure from having written what I consider a very good sex scene, as against some of the crap that comes from my fingers, and think to myself “if that doesn’t get the reader excited then nothing will” but it’s never got me personally excited.

Very occasionally, and I mean very occasionally, I have read something that has got me excited and I’ve complimented the writer on doing so. But the vast majority of the time I pass over the sex scenes because they are boring.

I do get a certain satisfaction from having written a good piece of prose. But I'm not sure that that is what you mean, is it? Oh, well. :)

Well, as I've said before never as I'm writing. Too focused, but when I'm editing I hope so. If it doesn't make me horny then, it's time for a rewrite.

But I also go back repeatedly to what I suppose is my erotic comfort zone, which typically means stories featuring, mature women with high sex drives and exhibitionist tendencies.
As you say, Simon, a slightly perverted boy can always rely on his mom ;).

What an amazingly erotic and well-written post

It's weird. You'd think I'd get horny writing all this sex stuff, but I don't..

I just started writing, but every story I've written here started while being very horny. I can't just decide 'Oh, tonight I'll write some erotica.' although I suppose I'd like to be able to summon the ability to.

I get started writing, and it turns out filled with typos, but all of the most important bits get saved while I'm still a hot mess. So far, it's been rare that I don't have my first draft done in the same session I started it in.

Having to go back later, and edit, and possibly make other changes is definitely a different story and the part of this whole process that I enjoy least of all.

My experience is very much like yours, BrightShinyGirl…. I write erotica as a very powerful erotic experience, and I’m certainly aroused (and erect) while I’m writing, and I pause to stroke myself from time to time as the writing progresses. But I’m not really masturbating, or even edging, I’m just enjoying the sense and sensation oy my arousal.

It is an interesting question why writing erotica is itself so powerfully erotic, at least for me. In part I think its because writing a story is just an extension and elaboration of the usual process of private sexual fantasy-making that I enjoy so much. I started writing erotic stories for myself simply as a way to develop and prolong and enrich and intensify my private sexual fantasies. But I soon found that I was also very turned on by the idea of other people reading my fantasies and being turned on by them. So that as I write Im not just turned on by the story as it unfolds in my mind, but by the thought that it will (I hope!) arouse the people who will read it. Does that make sense to anyone?

It does make sense. Just I personally don't have that sex drive and can look at sexual content without arousal fairly easily. Probably a good thing, since if I was actually aroused, I don't think I'd be getting much work done at all.

I don't know if this needs to be said but there's no shame in being into one's own erotica, nor does "being a professional about it" make the erotica any less authentic.

I've read your stories and it obviously works, because they turn ME on!

Strangely, the opposite to a lot of answers here.

I get the buzz when I'm writing, and if I don't, then I may rewrite a scene or take the story in a new direction until I do.

However, when I'm editing I rarely get even a tingle. I'm too busy focused on the exact sentence structure and the meaning it should be conveying.

Around 1990, I was writing questions for an adult game show being produced by an arm of Warner Brothers. They were all sex questions. This was before the internet. I had gone to four or five used bookstores and bought about 20 books on sex. Everything from "The Joy of Sex", a lot of "How to Do It" books, some sexual trivia books, everything I could find on the subject.

I spent the entire day reading and researching about sex and writing questions about sex I was so damn horny all day!! By the time my wife got home from work, as soon as she walked in, I would grab her and literally jump on her bones the very first thing. Good thing we were younger.

If sharing something sexy with someone specific where specifically there is a mutual need, yes.

Otherwise, reading in general tends to get me going much more because I can think about that someone specific in which there is that mutual need.
