Do you ever delete comments?

Well... I have deleted some...
reasons:
a) on some stories I have turned off the ability to leave public comments, I just didn't feel the need to have them on there anymore
b) some of them were things that they asked me to fix like mixing up names or a formatting error
c) I have had a few that the attacks were personal by people that are simply sick in the head and won't leave me alone

I feel that it is our right as author's to be able to delete the comments that simply are there to cause trouble if we so choose and I would think that Laurel and Manu feel the same way since the power to delete comments is in our hands and not theirs.

One of the comments I deleted wasn't even directed at me. It was directed at the person who helped me with the story.

It was so nasty, had I been able to get my hands on the son of a bitch, I would have deleted him.

Two years and I'm still pissed about it.
Tell me something, Rob, did that comment look something like this...

Left on story #1:
New editor?

You need to find a new editor my friend. She apparently does not know much about dialogue.....think about it...

Left on story #2:
Amazing....

You honestly think she is a good editor? Why do you subject yourself to her ineptness? The dialogue is punctuated all wrong and the tags following it are capped instead of lowercased.....

Left on story #3:
Sighs.....

I am going to give you a 5 on this one only because YOU are a good writer; however, your editor lacks in a lot of ways...especially in her knowledge of dialogue. Here is an article on Lit for her to read BEFORE she attempts to edit another story.... http://english.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=8982. It will show her the PROPER way to write dialogue....

BTW...I only have 3 stories at this point or, I'm certain, I would have more of these.

No, mine was more along the lines of 'You friend is a dyke and all dykes must die.'

Gotta come through me, buddy.

It would appear these posters don't know what dialog is either. I just took a look at your stories, the dialog was correctly punctuated and the tags were properly capped or not, depending on the punctuation.

I would outright delete these as they appear to have a grudge against the editor not you. What do you expect from trolls?

Ahhh...that's just wicked fucked up, Sir Rob!
*sigh* I've been trying to decide if I should delete those or not. On the one hand I think they are malicous and should go and on the other I think that deleting them would somehow validate the PCer. Show publicly that they got me to react to them. You know, even negative attention is still attention. *shrug* That's why I've left them so far.

Wow...that's so sweet of you, zeb! *kissin' me a Dirty Old Man* Thanks for doing that, darlin'.
All of those we posted by the same person...and I also got an anonymus email feedback that said pretty much the same thing as the PCs.

 Since when do editors get their own personal trolls?!?!?!?

Sorry you got dinged with those comments/scores... I'll go read the article.

BTW, Tom ... nice rack.

 Thank you, Roguie.

Don't bother, darlin'. I don't agree with what the article had to say. I think that the method explained has validity and it's a very good article but I prefer the way that I do it because I understand it and don't have to think to much about it and there are many people who think I do it correctly. I'm talking about people who teach and what not. :D I did find someone to help make sure that I'm remaining consistant. Someone who agrees with my method of punctuation. It's a Bi guy so he can also give me helpful comments on the sex scenes, which I never expected you to be ale to do...lol

I do delete comments. I had a few telling me I was a guy who hated women for writing such violent acts against a woman. A woman would never write such horrible things. My story is in the BDSM area. What THE HELL did she think she was going to read?!?

Anyone who knows me knows I am all woman.

Comments? What are those?

Honestly though I have deleted one, and looking back on it I feel I shouldn't have. A couple of the comments that followed it made the troller look like the ass he(s) was.

Trolls suck. Annoymous Troll emails suck worse :)

If a comment is duplicated, I will delete one. If it is racist, I will delete it even if it is complimentary. Sometimes I leave the insulting ones, even personally insulting, if they are amusing.

A while ago, I had a story, I think in the Loving Wives cat. and it was getting the usual bombs. Zeb wrote a comment telling me to ignore the trolls, who were just stupid. Somebody else then wrote a comment that was titled "Fuck you Zeb" and I thought that was funny and started a thread about it. Later I deleted it, at Zeb's suggestion.

I can handle criticism. Most of it I ignore but some of it actually induces me to make some changes in how I write. Sometimes I even edit and repost a story because of what a PC says.

All honest, relevant comments stay. If somebody think my stuff sucks and says it, or think that I personally suck and says it, that's their opinion, and if they have no manners, it only reflects poorly on them.

I only delete double posts, external links, and incomprehensible babble.
I especially save the incomprehensible babble- sometimes it's almost poetry

ElSol's Reaction To Comments (Bad Ones)...

"You hated the story... and you made it all the way back here to comment on it? I don't even make it past the first sentence... so either you're a fucking dideedee, a masochist, or JESUS CHRIST, how could someone have that much time on their hands!"

And I never delete them... but remember, I take trolls as God's way of telling me that he loves me more than others.

Sincerely,
ElSol

I deleted comments that referred to an earlier, faulty version of the story.

The comments were valid criticism of the first published version, but not on the revised version.

I got a bit sad at first it seems people can only find problem with my stories, I mean if your going to comment try not to be so harsh right?

I usually leave them. I find that they are a great source of amusement when I'm feeling down. Case in point was the person who read my story and commented.

One year later, the same person read and commented, quoting their previous comment as belonging to another poster. That kind of oblivion warrants permanent documentation. ;)

I had an adventure with an author on another site. His non-fiction tale is set in my home town and is full of factual nonsense. To make this brief the author is a lawyer and made a big stink about my comments, but facts are facts and easily checked.

Five years(!) after my post above, I would add:

I think several times before deleting a comment. I don't get that many comments in total. If the comment is unfair sometimes subsequent PCs attack the comment.

Generally I leave the comment even if I think it is unreasonable. If totally unrelated to the story - then I probably would delete it.

Og

I have not done so far on Lit and I hope I never have reason to.

In an ideal world I never would have reason to because there is often something I can get out of even the most negative comments because I can just take what I want from it leaving my self esteem intact.

However never say never as I always say.

One time on another website I was having an on-line relationship with this woman, and some of this was public and a stalker went after her and was trying to trash me because he was jealous of what she and I had.

He started making alot of transphobic coments all over my posts including a cross dressing group where I was the administrator. I banned this guy from the group and deleted his coments mainly because I thought it was offensive to the whole group and not just for me.

I agree with the poster who said that derogatory comments are battle scars. If I get a lot of bullet holes in my superstructure, it means I engaged the enemy closely--and isn't that what we're supposed to do? Why patch up the proof that I did my job?

I estimate that 99.99% of the story writers at LIT want flattery only. But the other is a means to gauge whether your wares are inferior goods kept afloat by your friend's bullshit, or whether theyre decent fare.

JEJ, I hesitate to acknowledge your existence, much less ever to agree with you, but you are on the right track. There is a major "However"--who decides if my "wares are inferior goods"? Is it the anonymous lurker who one-bombs my story and leaves no comment? Is it the equally anonymous person who uses my story as a springboard to a socio-political diatribe, or an ad hominem attack, in an illiterate style? If the "decider" is a published author with substantial credits, then I'll take his/her judgment. As to the others, fuck 'em if they can't take a joke.
