Do Votes Matter

I suppose at the end of the day feedback is what keeps me writing, but I do like getting good votes.

keep writing because you like it or love it... and then your number of hits, vote count and score really don't matter that much anymore.

like many of us, votes are somewhat important to me because they attract readers. the more readers I have, the more likely someone will actually give me feedback.

However, shallow though it may be, I know enough about myself to be able to admit that I want to be liked. So even though I try not to put too much emotion into them, my scores do matter to me...

If someone spray painted "ASSHOLE" on the front of your house would you be pissed?

To me it's the same thing. We all work hard on our stories. We suffer through writers block, staring at a blank page when nothing will come. We rewrite 5 pages because the characters don't want to have sex. We sweat over details and edits trying to create a perfect story. Then it posts and all is going well the votes and feedback shows that people really like it. And our hearts pound with pride.

Then someone comes along and drops a one on it. No comment to tell you why, no indication of who did it. Someone just threw a bag of shit on your front door.

That's why.

I would like to say that I do not appreciate all or even most of my comments. I do not appreciate comments that say "you're great" or "you suck." I like the great one better than the other, but neither is much useful feedback. Why did the first reader think the story was great? Why did the second reader think it sucked? Tell me why and you help me. Just tell me good or bad and you help me little or none.

In my latest Nude Day stories someone bombed me "because the next chapter is gonna' suck." [This was during the one chapter a day posting schedule. The next chapter was not yet up.] If I could get a jury of authors I would kill the commenter and walk free! [By the way, the doofus later told me that the next chapter was quite a bit different than what the commenter thought. Really????]
