Do they sway you?

Watching Jimmy Kimmel and he has Janeane Garofalo on as a special co host for the week. Which will be a week I don't guess I will watch now.

Anyway, she of course starts on her anit-war speech and reasons for why her opinion should sway us to her side.

I sit here thinking about how many "has been" stars are on jumping on the same bandwagon of the anti-war campaign. I realize that I have lost any respect I ever had for these people as entertainers.

Mike Farrel? Well, he is the one I am most disappointed about losing respect for him. His mother in law was my little sister's 3rd grade teacher. This was during the MASH years. He would come to town for holidays and meet her classes during his visits. I always thought of him as a regular kind of guy who didn't take his celebrity status as seriously as others did. He never seemed arrogant or above the rest of Stillwater Oklahoma holiday visitors.

Now I see him, Martin Sheen, Janeane and others like them, whose spot light has faded, speaking out as though they were the moral spokespeople for the American people, and all I can think of is that they are just a bunch of entertainers looking for a camera lens to focus on them.

I don't value their opinions as though they are some supreme authority on what we as a nation should do. Why do they think that just because they are famous that we should pay more attention to them?

I am not saying they should shut up, after all it is their right to protest. I am saying that they should see themselves as every other citizen putting their two cents in on a subject they feel strongly about and stop trying to cram their celebrity status down our throats. I am tired of seeing them attack Bush, and those in this country that disagree with them and getting the air time just because of who they are. How shallow do they think we as a nation are?

They are entertainers, trying to capture the political spotlight just because their stage light went out.

So my question to you is this.....Do their views and arguments sway you at all?

I guess the biggest reason this bothers me is because I could care less if people are famous or not. I don't watch reality shows, or gossip shows because I could care less about who these people are. I am not a celebrity watcher and could care less how important they think they are. I feel this way about anyone who tries to flaunt their status to the rest of us normal folks. I know there are many here who are so infatuated with that kind of crap, but I am not one of them.

Are you?

I've said it before, and I'll say it now... The only reason I don't mind them speaking out, is because Washington is more likely to listen to "celebrities", than regular "Joe Schmoe" on the street.

While they may be sharing the sentiments that I have towards the possiblitites of a war, they don't sway me to think like they do.

At the same time I say they don't speak for me, in a sad pathetic way, they are speaking for me.

No, they don't for exactly your reasoning. If I want a political or war analysis, I'll look for an expert in that field. If I want a good joke, I'll talk to Janeane.

You have hit the nail on the head here.

There is nothing about their celebrity status that gives their point of view anymore or less weight than that of Joe Blow. But the networks play on the celebrity status and provide these average citizens a paltform from which to speak. Further, have you seen a celebrity that has supported the administrations policies on any of these shows?

These people are not experts in the field of International policy, nor are they privy to the information upon which decisions are made. They are merely average citizens that have been given a soap box. Unfortunately, many seem to think that because they can act, sing, or tell funny stories that they know more than the rest of us. I can gaurantee that they don't.

Lobito...I knew you would be the first to answer...

I understand what you are saying....they just happened to be on the same side you are on this time.

I would just hope that our government would not swayed by them more than the rest of us. I would hope that the will of all the people would mean more than the will of the few that were the loudest and most likely recognized by a 8 x 10 glossy. And if the will of the people just happens to be the same as the celebs then so be it.

I hated how Hollywood Clinton and his administration were taken in by all the glitz and glamour. After all, could you or I get a night in the Lincoln bedroom?

Spotlight of fools..

I'm glad they're out there identifying themselves. I've really reduced my "must rent" movie list!
They'll share the same notoriety as Lindberg campaigning against going to war with Germany after seeing their air force.

I feel exactly the same way.

Exactly!

I agree Ishmael, they only know as much as the newscasters are able to get out of the government. And none of us on the outside truly know what kind of evidence is really out there to support or protest against a war.

it's too bad that celbrities lives mean more than "ours" in the respcct that if they say something they can soemtimes get it done lots easier than we can. Who's gonna pay hundreds of dollars for a fund raising concert to see ME perform? No one in their right mind.

As for this statement, you've got it all wrong baby. I think you meant to put "CAN you & I spend a night in the Lincoln bedroom?"

You know, I've been in one on one's with many performers. Jane and Peter Fonda among them. Jane couldn't think her way out of wet paper bag. Peter could. Who kept their mouth shut?

Jimmy Stewart cooked dinners in my parents kitchen. He was an Air Force Brig. General. Who kept his mouth shut?

So because they can bilk the public out of their hard earned dollar, we should give them any credibility about politics and international affairs?

Not likely.

I believe that Entertainers are so in the anti-war camp because they alone among rich and powerful people with media access were once normal people. Most of them weren't born into super-rich plutocratic families, and so they tend to retain something of a conscience.

But even if that were true...they're still "normal" people - with no more expertise than you or me. They just happen to have a media outlet that will give them air-time.

Dennis Miller.

That's about it.

If I recall correctly, Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg have come out in support of the war. Normally they're the type to yap endlessly about their pet causes. Not here, though. Wonder why?

No one sways my opinions, least especially an entertainer. I do think that there are a few that truly believe whole heartedly in what they say but I also think that more pay lip service to the popular ideas and opinions... not necessarily what they think or feel on subject matters.

Coming from an over-the-top fascist piece of dog shit like you, I'll take that as a compliment.

Why thank you.

Obviously you are ignorant or the background of most of todays performers. But then again, your posts have consistently shown ignorance so no surprise there, is there?

never saw him as an actor

I honestly wasn't aware of his celebrity status. I knew that he was an actor, but can't say if I had ever seen a movie he was in.

Besides, look at the choice of the time, Carter? Mondale?

If I had to, I would say that they don't want to be shunned by their bleeding-heart brethren. Some celebrities have (allegedly) said as such to conservative pundits.

And there does seem to be some truth in that. Of the major Hollywood people who've outed themselves as Republicans or conservatives, their career has never really been the same: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kevin Costner, Charlton Heston, Tom Selleck.
