Bowling for Columbine helped renew my faith in the American people.
Specifically, the sherriff for Flint County when he was commenting on 'workfare'. 'Workfare' is where people on welfare are bussed to jobs so 'they can work for the money we so graciously give them'. All the companies that use 'workfare clients' are getting free labour. I think it's another term for slavery.
Anyhow, the sherrif, who you would expect to be a 'good ole boy', voting Republican, playing with his gun, unafraid to say nigger, etc., came across as thoughtful and intelligent. He wondered what good workfare did, since it lock it's victims into a cycle of dependency. And he wondered what happened to the kids of 'workfare clients' who now had no parents to look after them.
It really gave me hope. Sometimes, Americans can come across as awfully frightening. This man made me realise that it isn't Americans that are the enemy. It's pride, ignorance and avarice.
