Photo manipulations of photos that aren't yours probably won't fly in most cases. Not sure about the CG cartoon, although that kind of thing does seem to pop up in the Illustrated section.

The photos have been cartooned with PS or some other tool, but if the originals aren't something you own, the copyright for it won't fly just by changing to a cartoon. It's like using an art lightbox to trace a picture. It isn't really a drawing.

Well, you may want to remind Laurel of that. My assumption was that she kicked it back for that reason (taking porn from the web and filtering it, I mean). It's possible that cartoonized photos that would violate the rules on close-ups are in the same boat as the raw images; I'm not entirely clear on that myself (having never tried). Possibly check with the people in the editor's forum as well, since they might have clearer guidance on what photo manips are allowed.

Original line drawings inspired by a photo might be one category. Photos manipulated on Photoshop, or via AI, that might be another.

I am so depressed by this

I'm just taking a guess here, so it's not an expert opinion, but she may be treating any image that is clearly (or most likely) a manipulated photo as still a photographic image and therefore subject to the same restrictions regarding depictions of sex acts, genitals, etc. That's the safer position for her to take, anyway, from a legal perspective on her end. Still leaves you in the boat of which ones are too risque. Some of them are likely fine. Probably not the vaginal close-ups though, or the oral sex ones.
