Do the categories need updating?

Personally, I love LW. I think the category encompasses all that appropriate diversity in the genre. Don't see any problem with it being too diverse. The war between BTB and RAAC proponents is fun and part of the over the top engagement.

The only thing that needs to be fixed is to give writers a bit more visibility/control into the feedback system. Specifically, I would like:

1. Be able to reply to specific comments.
2. Have the authors comments on their own stories appear automatically instead of having to go through moderation.
3. Be able to see my score segregated by: authors, registered users who follow me, registered users who have ever favorited one of my stories, other registered users, unregistered users.

if I had those three things, I would be 100% satisfied. I would even pay $10 a month for a premium tier that gave me those three things.

I’m not really following your thought process. Sure, the name of the category is an appropriate name. What is it that you’re saying aligns with the description? A majority of the stories there do not match the category description.

That’s a major part of the problem: Different readers (and writers) have different ideas about what belongs in the category, because so much stuff gets published there which isn’t hotwife or swinging or (mutual) fun, as the category is described. Nor “loving” wife, as the title indicates.
That 'stuff' probably shouldn't be there. Or here at all.

If they were looking for old stuff, yes. But part of the problem with the category as it stands is that it mixes together two things that don't go. It's like orange juice and toothpaste.
And they still would be, with the complication of at least one more repository.

Perhaps it would be better if authors identified the nature of their work using relevant tags.

I guess a lot depends on whether you think loving is an adjective or a verb.

This is a good line, but it's also one of the fundamental problems with the category.

I really do think that a lot of the haters see it as an adjective, which is why they think those are the only stories that belong there. Then they show up and see a bunch of stories where it's a verb, and the wife in question is happily indulging herself with Caribbean cabana boys (which was fully in keeping with Laurel's intent), and they get all pissy.

At least they'd be more separated going forward. Tags are of pretty limited use as well.

That at least happens naturally. Once you get on the white list, your comments go up instantly instead of waiting for moderation. Posting comments that pass moderation moves you toward being on the white list, and publishing stories that pass moderation seems to speed that process as well.

So anyone who posts a bunch of stories on LW and engages in the um... spirited debates there... will quickly graduate to the white list and be able to respond to vitriol in real time.
