I’m currently writing in non-erotic. The story opens with the MC at age seventeen. In chapter nine he turns eighteen and there’s a very brief sex scene that trails off leaving the rest to the readers’ imagination. That was my plan on handling sex in this story as the tale is not sexually focused and there are no graphic or extended sex scenes. There are mentions of sex and the characters discuss sex, but even those scenes are limited in scope.

I noticed that pending part ten was listed in erotic couplings. I assumed I made an error, opened that story, changed the category to non-erotic and left a message to the moderator - sorry for the resubmission, I had selected the wrong category. I then double checked my pending list and it was correct, back to square one, and no longer scheduled for posting today.

This morning my part ten was posted in erotic couplings, which is upsetting because people looking for erotica will will be terribly disappointed. They’ll be wasting their time.

Do moderators make judgements and change story categories… or is this a glitch in the matrix? If they do, they just torpedoed my story. It does not belong in erotic couplings.

Yes they do. Only had it happen to me once. And I think they were right (can’t recall the details).

If you disagree, then PM @Laurel

What they said: yes they (Laurel) do.

I had one tagged for Mature that was moved to Loving Wives, a category that I steer clear of because the rancor there slops over into non-LW. Fortunately the story was pulled within two days after a complaint about content, but the damage was done - I earned a “follower” or two who dings everything I’ve posted since then.

I don't believe it has ever happened to me, but yes, I know if your story doesn't fit the selected category, Laurel will put it where it does fit.

Gotta love Klingons.

Thanks for the info. I will contact the admin. If I’m forced to submit in erotic couplings I’ll consider discontinuing this work. Maybe the MC will get hit by a bus in the next chapter.

I'm guessing if you include sex in non-erotic it's going to break the matrix. The whole site is erotic... except that one little bit. Laurel wants to keep it clean.

BTW, not read the story, but if it's not a romance and/or it doesn't explicitly include a HEA, you're far better off in Erotic Couplings. The Romance crowd will hate it otherwise.

Excuse the noob, but what is HEA?

There is no "they" in "moderating" the story submissions file. There is only Laurel, the single acquisitions editor, and, yes, she retains the privilege of determining the category the story gets placed in.

Yes they do. Often to corral like stories together, but equally as often to place a story in a category where they think the story will run best. I'd trust Laurel's judgement on that - I mean, she's read one or two stories over the years, and would have a pretty good idea what fits best where.

I have spent far too much time today thinking about this and looking at each category trying to find a home for my light-on-sex style in this particular story. That category doesn't exist. The last thing I want to do is throw R-rated chapters - or soft porn - into a category where readers are seeking full-on, graphic sex scenes. So far, in erotic couplings, my reassigned chapter has been met with indifference.

I'm beginning to think my style and content have no home in Literotica.

Ok, so, plenty of folk here post erotic stories with little-or-no sex to great acclaim. Lit readers want strokers or stories - or both on different days - but don't assume it's all the former, for it most certainly is not. In fact, speaking from personal experience, I'd say there was a bias towards a good story over straight-up sex.

It's tough to advice on categories without knowing more, so if you share a synopsis, suggestions will flow.

Incidentally, from what you've said so far, definitely worth adding "All characters are over 18 while they're gettin' it on", to save issues with submitting on a 17 year old.

Novels and Novellas?

I'm sure that someone's going to crap on me for saying this but pretty much everything in EC is met with indifference.

It's a big category because it's a catch-all for anything too vanilla for all the kinky categories. That makes it difficult for people to find you in the big random stew, so you get less traffic. Since there are a lot of postings, you will be bumped off the new list quickly, meaning even less traffic. Then there is the fact that most readers search by kink and EC is inherently not kinky, so few readers purposely look there. Think about it: how many readers say "I want me some bro/sis today, I'll go search IT", how many say "I want some anal today, I'll go search anal", and how many do you really think say "I want some vanilla today, I'll go search EC"? Yeah, no contest. EC gets weak traffic. If you are not a known high profile writer, your only hope is tags.

I disagree.
There are plenty of stories in different categories, with no sex at all.
Don't let that dissuade you.
A good story, is still a good story. It will be read wherever it lands.
Keep writing, enjoy it as best you can. I would contact Laurel and ask for it to be categorised where you wanted.

I wrote a 12k word story in Lesbian Sex. The only actual fucking was in the last six paragraphs and it was painted with a very light brush.

Good stories will find an audience.

Funnily enough, my second most commented on story was in EC, and pretty much established me and my style. That was long before I had a decent number of followers.

EC isn't the backwater category a lot of people think it is. True, it's a catch-all, but there are more silent places, I reckon.

They only places that readers specifically look to less is how to, letters/transcripts and non-erotic.
