Topkapi Palace is, overall, such a beautiful work of architecture. I think it is one of the most spectacular buildings in the world, but I've never actually been to it (or to Turkey at all).

I've have seen pictures and video of the palace, including the harem quarters, it really is a stunning place. It most certainly wouldn't be an unpleasant home (implications of being a wife, concubine, unmarried sister, mother, or general female servant of an Ottoman Sultan aside).

We went to Topkapi twice - once in the beginning of the trip and once at the end - so the pictures from there are at the beginning and the end of the set.

What's funny is that the sultan ended up abandoning Topkapi for the Dolmabahçe Palace, which is this ghastly Versailles-looking place but with an Asia Minor flavor.

Wait, my wife is telling me that the fabulous marble bathroom WAS in the fancy gold palace, not at Topkapi. Aw hell, I dunno.

I don't know, but the Blue Mosque is also an amazing looking building, it's so beautiful. I love Near Eastern architecture, it seems to make use of circular shapes more often than Western styles.

It's even better on the inside! Unfortunately when we were there they were doing some restoration, so my outside pictures were marred by scaffolding.

Aya Sofya looks much better in person than it does in my pictures, of course, all of which came out too dark.
